Roels, Carlton B. (29 January 1898
- 4 July 1970)
Funeral services for Carlton B. Roels, 72, of Neillsville,
who died Saturday at Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids, were held Tuesday
at 2 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home. The Rev. George Yons officiated. Burial
was made Wednesday in Acacia Park Cemetery at Mendota, Mn.
Mr. Roels was
born January 29, 1898, to Jules and Carrie (Nuss) Roels in DePere. He was
educated in DePere and attended the following colleges: La Crosse State
University, De Paul University and Western Michigan University. He married
Marian Cardel, his first wife, who died in 1962, and then married the former,
Edna Russell, in 1963, in Neillsville.
He spent many weeks at summer
sessions and coaching clinics and had majors in physical education, social
science and drivers’ education. During his coaching years, his football teams
won 14 championships and were undefeated; the basketball team also was
successful, with four teams playing in the Minnesota State tournament finals. He
was honored as a coach many times and served in that field for 42 years.
Survivors include: his wife and three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Myrabelle) Stanley
of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Russell (Virginia) Hoppe of Ironton, Mn. and Mrs. Robert
(Carol) Porter of Laurel, Md., and eight grandchildren.
Organist was Mrs.
Jess W. Scott.
People attending from out-of-town included: Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Stanley and daughters, Susan, Jill, and Barbara of St. Lewis, Mo.; Mrs.
Robert Porter of Laurel, Md.; Mrs. Russell Hoppe and daughter, Carol, of
Ironton, Mn; Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Besler of Woodruff; Linda Johnson of St. Cloud,
Mn.; Caryl Grinde and Elsie of Madison; Francis Syforth, Colonel Larson and
Merlin Probst of Chippewa Falls; Mrs. Geraldine Roels and Robert Roels of
Oshkosh; and Harriet Hendershot of Sheboygan.
