Schield, Dr. Carroll N. (21 November 1917 - 22 November 2013)

Dr. Carroll N. Schield, 96, formerly of Neillsville, passed
away Friday, Nov. 22, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg.
Carroll was
born Nov. 21, 1917, in Neillsville as the only child of Joseph and Alice
Schield. After graduating from Neillsville High School in 1936, he attended
college at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, on a basketball scholarship.
After one year at Drake, he elected to attend dental school at Marquette
University in Milwaukee, where he met and eventually married, his wife of 67
years, Elizabeth (Betty) Schield. Upon graduation from Marquette’s dental
program, Carroll served in the U. S. Army as a medical officer in both Europe
and the Philippines from 1941 to 1945. Following his honorable discharge, he and
Betty returned to Neillsville, where he practiced dentistry from 1946 to 1984
and they raised a family of seven children. After retirement, Carroll and Betty
moved to Florida, returning each summer to to the family’s cottage at Hatfield.
A private and quiet man, Carroll was a dedicated professional, a
well-regarded community member and a cherished husband, father, grandfather and
great-grandfather. Always active, he was an avid tennis player and played the
game well into his late 80’s. He was a lifelong Packer fan, a baseball
enthusiast and enjoyed time with his family. As a testament to his professional
achievements, Carroll held life memberships in the American Dental Association,
Wisconsin Dental Association and Central Wisconsin Dental Society. He belonged
to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville and St. James’ Catholic Church in
New Port Richey, FL.
Carroll was preceded in death by his wife Betty in
2011.
He is survived by his seven children, Patricia (Jay) Werth of Santa
Rosa, CA, Dr. Dan (Roberta) Schield of Neillsville, Wendy Smail of Boulder, Co,
Joseph Schield of Port Richey, FL, Mary Alice Schield of Sonoma, CA, Kim (Shawn)
Schield of Arlington, VA, and David (Rebecca) Schield of Middleton; 12
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be
held at St. Mary’s Church in Neillsville, Friday, January 24, 2014, with
visitation, beginning at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m.
