Mavis H. Binning, 93, Pecatonica,
Illinois, died at 5:35 a.m., Monday, December 16, 2013, in Presence St. Anne
Center, Rockford, Illinois after complications with cancer. Born June 25, 1920,
In Unity, Wisconsin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry and Leona (Holthusen)
Greve. Mavis had lived in Pecatonica since 1954. Married Russell N. Binning in
Wisconsin on May 4, 1940. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Pecatonica
and Pecatonica Dorcas Society. Mavis and her husband owned and operated the
Pecatonica Gambles store from 1954 to 1979. She had a special love for her
grandchildren and they all have fond memories of time spent with her. Mavis was
well known for making Danish Kringle for all church events, bake sales and
shut-ins. Over the years, she made hundreds of quilts that were sent through her
church to world relief. Mavis was a wonderful mother and a good friend.
Survivors include sons, Russell “Arnie” (Cathy) Binning, Pecatonica, Illinois
and James (Bonnie) Binning, Rockford, Illinois; grandchildren, John, Ken (Karen
Hrncir), David (Jamie), Eric (Mary), Joshua (Jenn) and Marci; 10
great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; brother, Gene (Jackie) Greve; and
numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; sister,
Lorraine; and brother Milton.
Funeral ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday, December 21, 2013, in First Lutheran church, 218 East 6th Street,
Pecatonica, Illinois, with Pastor Tom Jacoby officiating. Burial will be in
Pecatonica Cemetery, Pecatonica, Illinois. Visitation will be held at the church
from 9a.m. to time of service Saturday. Per Mavis’ wishes, please no flowers.
