Barrett, Duane (25 DEC 1932 - 5 JUL 1952)

The Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) community was deeply shocked Saturday when word was received of the drowning of Duane Barrett, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verland Barrett of Greenwood. Duane downed in 15 feet of water at Rock Dam at 3:45 p.m. on July 5, 1952.

He had waded out 50 feet into the dam reservoir to return a boat that had broken loose and was drifting away. Not being a swimmer he was unable to get the boat and was returning to shore when he stepped into a drop off.

His father rushed into the water to get him, but both went down, and his father was unconscious when taken from the water. Duane's body was recovered a short time later by Ronald Obernberger, Racine, who had been swimming. Artificial respiration was given and Dr. W.A. Olson was called. He worked over him for 45 minutes but to no avail.

Duane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verland Barrett, was born in Neillsville on Dec. 25, 1932.

He graduated from the Greenwood High School with the class of 1950, and had been employed in Milwaukee.

He is survived by his parents, a sister, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Worden, and a brother, James.

Funeral services were held at the Grace Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9th. The Rev. Lee Holmes officiated. He was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

The pallbearers were George Plunkett, Wilbert Swieso, Nyle Brandt, Junior Wehrman, Don Davis and Russell Cook.

The honorary pallbearers were classmates: Joseph, Oblack, Donald Schwarze, Gerald Horn, Verlyn Sloniker, Darrel Horn and Lloyd Horn.
