Mediger, Monte (1971? - 7 DEC 2013)
Monte Mediger, 42, of Abbotsford, formerly of Keizer, Ore., passed away December
7, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
Services will be held on
Saturday, December 14, 2013, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Abbotsford,
with visitation beginning at 12:00 and services and military honors beginning at
2:00. A lunch and time for sharing will be held after the service.
An
additional service and time for celebration will be planned for a later date in
Keizer, Oregon with internment at the Willamette National Cemetery.
Monte
was born in Crescent City, Calif., to James (Jim) and Candis (Candy) Mediger. He
was a member of the 1990 Roseburg High School graduating class in Roseburg,
Ore., and was a proud Indian until the end.
Monte served in the United
States Navy from 1990 to 1994, and served on both the USS Thach and the USS Carl
Vinson. He achieved the rank of E5 and received the National Defense Service
Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the SW Asia Service Medal with the
Bronze Star. He proudly helped defend our country during the first Gulf War when
his ship was stationed in the Persian Gulf.
As an avid golfer, he enjoyed
many hours at the McNary Golf Course in Keizer, Ore., where he was a member with
his father and later enjoyed several years as part of the men’s league at the
Meadowview Golf Course in Owen-Withee. Monte also enjoyed the outdoors,
specifically fishing. He relished the thrill of salmon fishing on the Oregon
Coast and on the Columbia River.
He later found joy in the many lakes in
Northern Wisconsin and even came to enjoy ice fishing.
Monte was an
active member of the Abbotsford Lions Club and the Dorchester Midnight Riders
Snowmobile club. He was an honorary member of the local “Hog Farmers” motorcycle
group and enjoyed several cross country trips with his wife, Joanna, as well as
many weekend rides on their beloved Honda Goldwing. They especially enjoyed
riding the Beartooth and Chief Joseph Highways in Southern Montana and Northern
Wyoming.
Monte’s true love, though, was football. He proudly helped coach
the Regis Rams of Stayton, Ore., for several years and then later served as the
Defensive Coordinator for the Abbotsford Falcons of Abbotsford. As a huge fan of
college football, he shared every win and loss with the Oregon Ducks, his
beloved team.
Monte is preceded in death by his grandparents, Eugene and
Mary Mediger, and John and Joyce Wilson; and his aunt, Annette Crandall.
Monte is survived by his wife of nearly ten years, Joanna Mediger; his parents,
Jim and Candy; his sister, Angela (Jeff) Badgett; four neices, Shalynn and
Marisa Eckley, and Molly and Madison Fish; his nephew, Evan Fish; several uncles
and cousins; and his beloved dog, Jack.
