Candidates Now Training (15 Jun
1916)
Every two years, the spring session of the county board is the
trial grounds for political aspirations and at this time prospective candidates
make it a point to be present with their ears to the ground and make their
announcements. Last week’s session was no exception to the rule and there
developed a fairly likely field of candidates, some of whom are old hands at the
game and some of whom are colts who have never run a race before.
The
office which seemed to attract the most attention was that of county treasurer,
as Ole Andersen will make the run for county clerk this fall. There are four
avowed candidates for treasurer: John J. Irvine of town of Beaver, T.H. Barber
of Withee, Pearl Vanderhof of Spencer and John Dwyer of Neillsville. As yet
there is no other candidate in the field for clerk but Ole Andersen. Harry
Hewett was down from Eaton during the week and he will be a candidate for the
job of sheriff which position he held very efficiently two years ago. It now
looks as though George Ure will have no opposition for clerk of the court. For
the office of register of deeds it is possible that there will be two aspirants,
Elmer Rossman, the present incumbent, and John Kintzele of town of York,
although neither of these gentlemen have made their intentions definitely known.
There is also a degree of uncertainty about the Republican nomination for
district attorney, though at present W.J. Rush is very likely to make the run
for re-election as a petition liberally signed was presented to him last week
asking him to again be a candidate and it will be pretty hard for Walter not to
accede to the wishes of the friends on the petition. If he does not make the
race, it is possible that A.L. Devos of this city and Frank Jackson of Colby
will be pitted against each other for the nomination.
Senator Monk will
make the run for the nomination for senator from this district. It has been
variously rumored that Hon. E.W. Crosby will oppose him, but Mr. Crosby has made
no statement to that effect and as he is not aspiring to re-election as
assemblyman for business reasons, just what he will do is not known, but the
chances are that he will not be a candidate for any office. While the board was
here, several members suggested the name of A.J. Young of Abbotsford as a
candidate for the senate, but Mr. Young made no statement. By the withdrawal of
Mr. Crosby from the field, the nomination for assemblyman was open and W.L.
Smith has decided to make the run for this position. He was defeated for this
same nomination by C.M. Bradford a few years ago and ever since has had the
“come back” feeling and from the encouragement given him by the board members,
it appears that he will come back right strong.
The above seems to be the
line-up at present, although it is a long time until the September primary and
as the water is fine and the pool large, there may be others who will hold their
breaths for a minute and jump in.
