Pieper, Reuben (13 MAY 1924 - 23 AUG 1952)
Reuben Pieper, 28, Milwaukee drowned at Rock Dam, 8 miles west of Willard, on
Saturday, Aug. 23, 1952, when he topped from a boat at 11:30 a.m. and sank
beneath the water while witnesses watched helplessly. He was alone in the boat
and was having trouble with his motor, and stood up to try to start it.
When the motor started the boat lurched, throwing Pieper into the water. He
could not swim and witnesses were too far away to reach him in time.
The
body was found at 5:30 p.m., after a dragging crew had worked since noon. He was
about 1/4 mile off shore and about 30 feet from where he fell in.
