 Barnes, Alberta (26 AUG 1912 – 28 MAY 1942)

Mrs. Alberta Warner Barnes, wife of Hillery Barnes, cattle foreman for the 71 ranch and prominent resident of Deeth area, died suddenly at her home at Deeth this morning, May 28, 1942.

Mrs. Barnes was apparently in good health and was doing her housework this morning when she was suddenly stricken.

She was 29 years of age, having been born in Greenwood, Wisconsin, August 26, 1912.  She had lived most of her life in Elko County and was married to Mr. Barnes on October 20, 1930.

At the time of her death she was noble grand of the Deeth lodge of Rebekahs and was also active in the Starr Valley progressive club.

Beside her husband she is survived by two sons, Warner and Charles, both of Deeth, her mother, Mrs. Warner also of Deeth and her father, a resident of Wisconsin.

Two sisters preceded Mrs. Barnes in death, one dying in 1930 and the other in 1936.

Services were conducted under the direction of the Rebekah lodge with a Christian Science reading and were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Arnold Mortuary in Elko.  Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Elko.

Mrs. Warner’s letter added the following information that local friends are anxious to know:

“The cause of Alberta’s death was a stroke or blood clot.  She lost consciousness at once and only lasted about an hour.  I was here at the house alone with her but Hillery got her before she was gone.  Many neighbors came to help us.  The doctor was called from Elko, 30 miles distant, but she was gone before he arrived.  He doubted if he could have helped any.  Alberta has been a wonderful daughter, most kind and thoughtful of others as well as of me.  Her married life was full and very happy.

The funeral was at Elko.  We had a Science Reader and then her lodge took over.  One of Elko’s prominent lawyers sang.  The flowers were beautiful and many.  We found we had friends galore in our adopted home.

Ruth Huntzicker is just finishing her school here in Elko and has been most thoughtful.

Relatives who came included Marjorie’s husband, Ray Peterson from Sacramento; Edith Varney and Maud Varney Huffmire and daughters of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mr. Barnes brother, 2 sisters and sons from Salinas, Calif.”
