Speich, Lillian Emma (30 OCT 1898 –
05 JUL 1946)
Lillian Emma Speich was born October 30, 1898 at Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. At the age of 5 years she moved to Greenwood, Wisconsin with her
parents, who resided on a farm one mile north of Greenwood. She attended school
up to the 8th grade. At that time, having lost most of her hearing, she entered
the Wisconsin School for the Deaf at Delavan, Wisconsin where she finished the
8th grade and high school course. She was Valedictorian of the graduating class
and won a scholarship, which entitled her to a course of training at Gallaudet
College at Washington, D.C.
For twelve years she was employed at Eau
Claire, Wisconsin. The past three years she has been supervisor at the Wisconsin
School for the Deaf at Delavan, Wisconsin.
She was taken ill last
December and never fully recovered. On June 15th she returned home and on June
19th, she was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, Wisconsin.
She
passed on to her reward on July 5th, having attained an age of 47 years, 8
months and 5 days. Her father, one brother and one sister preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her death, her mother, Anna M. Speich, who at this time
is a patient at the Marshfield hospital. Her sister, Mrs. Rose Ludwig, her
brothers: Jake, John and George of Greenwood, Abe of Ripon, Wisconsin; Fred of
Pittsville, Wisconsin; Harry of Mineral Point, Wisconsin and Edward of Lima,
Ohio.
Funeral services were held at the Reformed Church in the city of
Greenwood, with Rev. J.C. Klingeberger officiating. Singing was rendered by the
Junior Choir of the West Side Reformed Church, with Mrs. J.C. Klingeberger
assisting at the organ.
