Carl, Harlan (Honored - 7 FEB 1953)
Over 400
people turned out last Saturday evening to honor Greenwood's givt to the
University of Wisconsin's football team, Hy Carl.
Earlier in the evening
Hy and several friends were entertained at a dinner which was sponsored by
several businessmen.
Dr. W.A. Olson, Greenwood, Physician and friend of
the Carl family, was the principal speaker. Dr. Olson traced the history of
carl's prowess on the gridiron from its beginning in high school. Citing several
instances in which his spirit and ability helped Greenwood gain victories, Dr.
Olson listed one year in which Carl scored 114 points over a six-game span.
As a remembrances of the evening, dr. Olso presented Carl with a plaque.
During his talk, Carl explained that his greatest thrill did no come from on
the football field.. "It was a telephone call from my high school coach, Paul
Thompson, telling me that my family was being given an expense paid trip to the
Rose Bowl."
Teammates Jerry Witt of Marshfield and Mark Hoegh of Kaukauna
cited the 21-year old Greenwood youth at "one of the greatest halfbacks in the
country, and a player who has the respect of his mates."

Carl's football coach, gave a brief talk on the youth's high school career. Dr.
r. Weiher, also made a few remarks. Bill Kavanaugh served as master of
ceremonies.
Preceding the program, movies of the Rose Bowl games were
shown.
Among those present for the testimonial were several of Carl's
friends from the University. They included Jim E. Hrubecker, Tom Teackhoff, Fred
Reich, Ray Carlson, Chuck Josvanger, John Dittrich, Bill Molnar and his brother,
Dewey Carl.
