Hunt, Hale (Letter to Gleaner - 19 MAR 1953)

Dear Sir:

Your history of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) with pictures is most interesting to we old timers who still take the Gleaner. I wonder in what part of town the "First shoe shop" was located as pictured in last week's paper. I believe that it was on the west side of main street opposite the old Klinke store, but I could be wrong. Who was the owner?

The old Grist Mill and the F. & N.E. railroad station are shown in this week's paper, along with a building built later, which I think was also a feed and produce warehouse. Was it run by Mr. E.N. Paul at one time? E.N. Paul later became famous as a baseball umpire in the days of Dad Carter and Pat Cronin.

There are not too many of us left who remember Mr. Shrimpton, manager of the Flour Mill, and the wagon loads of gran brought from miles around. Nor are there many who recall Big Bill Foster as he swung onto the combination coach and baggage car as it left the depot for Fairchild, as the train left on its daily trip. The train probably carried three or four passengers and hauled several loads of logs, and perhaps a boxcar or two. I wonder when the F. & N.E. made its last trip. The morning departure about 11:00 a.m. was quite an occasion, and many gathered to wave farewell, even at they watch the Zephyr or the Four Hundred today.
