Humke, Adeline A. (29 JAN 1880 - 20 MAR 1953)

Adeline Anna Pischer, daughter of the late Peter and Margaret Pischer, was born Jan. 29, 1880 in La Crosse, Wis. She received her education in La Crosse County schools and grew to womanhood there. For a time she helped care for her two small cousins, John and Rose Anderegg, who mother died when they were infants.

During the Christmas holidays of 1900, she visited her Uncle and Aunt, Mr. and Mrs. August Steiger of Greenwood, and while there met Theodore Humke. A courtship ensued and tehy were married on March 31, 1903 at La Crosse, and immediately came to Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.).

To this union nine children were born, six daughters and three sons.

Mrs. Humke was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield on Jan. 7th, and after a week's stay was released and came home. Her health continued to fail however, and she was returned to the hospital on Jan. 21st, gangrene set in and she died there at 11:00 p.m. on March 20, 1953.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, five daughters and two sons: Mrs. P.H. (Esther) Franzmeier, New Albin, Iowa; Mrs. Francis (Irene) Schweinler, Mosinee; Mrs. Fred (Rose) Timmler, Greenwood; Mrs. Louis (Cora) Slock, Eau Claire; Mrs. William (Vera) Stafford, Milwaukee; Harold of Nekoosa, and Everett, La Crosse; one sister, Mrs. Jake Steiger, La Crosse; 14 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Her parents, her brother, one daughter, Irma, and one sons, Lt. Herbert, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted at the West Side Evangelical and reformed Church, of which she was a member, on Thursday, April 2, 1953. She was laid to rest in the West Side Cemetery. Rev. Charles Koch officiated. She was also a charter member of the West Side Ladies Aid.

During the services the Junior Choir sang "Abide with Me" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."

The pallbearers were Eldore, Paul, Elmer and Irvin Humke, Walter Schwarze and Walter Decker, all nephews.

Franzmeier, Richard and Donald, New Albin, Iowa; Mrs. Francis Schweinler, Wm., Barbara and Luann, Mr. and Mrs. James Daublender and Barbara Humke, Mosinee; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Slock, Rachel, and Charles, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Syth, Eau Claire; Rev. and Mrs. Ben Stuckey, Mrs. Rose Eberhart, Gretchen Hauser, Mary Hartz, Cilla Kippenhan, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bruhn, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Loos, Mrs. Elizabeth Loos, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Anderegg, Jake Anderegg, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anderegg, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Timmler, Mr. and Mrs. Alber Wehrman, Otto Wehrman, Loyal; Mrs. Lillian Schweinler, Beloit; Mr. and Mrs. Willard Stafford and son Ronald, Mrs. Ella Steiger, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Schwarze, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Laube, Owen; Mr. and Mrs. Lebrecht Kalsow, Mr. and Mrs. Art Wegner, Globe; Mrs. John Kuehn, Mrs. Flora Gand, Marshfield; Mrs. Ed Hohl, Christie; Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Steiger, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Humke, Jake, Irvin adn Walter Steiger, Mrs. John Michalski, La Crosse; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Humke, Nekoosa; Mrs. Wm. Thomas, Ettrick; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuester of Loyal. There were more whom we failed to get due to the extremely large number of people who attended the services and who left immediately after the service.

Mrs. Humke died two days before their golden wedding anniversary.
