Willis
Ira Wells, son of Ira A. and Sarah Elizabeth Wells, was born Dec. 25, 1872 at
Whitehall, wis. Here he grew to manhood and assisted with the farm work until
his marriage.
On Dec. 25, 1904 he was united in marriage to Grace
Freeman. They continued to farm there until March 23, 1911, when they came to
Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) and settled on a farm 1 1/2 miles northeast of here.
He resided on the farm until his death. He was baptized in the First Baptist
Church at Whitehall on July 23, 1905. To this union was born one son, Adelbert.
Mr. Wells passed away at his home at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 1953,
following a few months illness, although he had been up and around until about a
week ago.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 24th at 1:30 p.m. at
the Grace Methodist Church, with Rev. Chambers officiating. He was buried in the
Greenwood Cemetery.
During the service Mrs. Geo. Haeuser and Mrs. Louis
Behrens sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Save in the Arms of Jesus," accompanied by
Mrs. Wm. Olson at the organ.
The pallbearers were P.A. Johnson, Elmer
Johnson, Clarence Verhulst, Leonard Johnson, Carl Nelson and Godfrey Dyre.
Those in charge of the flowers were Mmes. P.A. Johnson, Clarence Verhulst,
Leonard Johnson, and George Einfeldt.
Mr. Wells is survived by his wife
Grace, a son Adelbert; four grandchildren, Mrs. Norbert (Adella) Friske,
Greenwood; Mrs. Norman (Marguerite) Friske, Whitehall; Donald A. and Burton R.,
both of Greenwood; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Adelbert (Elsie) Wells, two
grandsons-in-law, Norman and Norbert Friske, a granddaughters-in-law, Mrs.
Donald (Kathryn) Wells; five great-grandchildren, a sister, rs. Daisy Warner,
Wausau; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who praised him for
his honesty and sterling character.
Those from away who attended the
funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Norman Friske, son Fredric and daughter Faye, Mrs.
Alvie Cummings and Miss Ethel Mallory, Whitehall; Mrs. Daisy Warner and son Dr.
R.J. Warner, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson, Hixton; Mr. and Mrs. Vern Hopp,
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Cummings, Alma Center; Mrs. Lucille (Wellen) Koeh, La
Crosse; Mrs. Anna Dux, Mr. Wm. Dux, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dux, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Dux, Neillsville; Mrs. Clara Friske, Rochester, Minn.; Mrs. Herschel Edwards,
Stevens Point; Mr. and Mrs. John Prestin, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Prestin and Mrs.
Jack Haendel of Milwaukee.
