Braun, Mr./Mrs. Ed (Return from Trip - JUL 1953)
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Braun
returned from an enjoyable four week tour of Canada and the western states.
They, together with their son Edward, left June 17th by way of the Twin
Cities, through Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and then into Canada to Banoff
National Park. Her the majestic Rockies were still covered with snow and were
steaming with evaporation above the timer line, which created a beautiful sight
in the sunlight. We visited Lake Louise, which is a beautiful sight, bordered by
forest clad mountains and Victoria Glacier creeped down to the water's edge.
Moraine Lake, another beauty spot, lies in the valley of the Sen peaks, with
summits rising to an elevation of ten thousand feet or more. At Havre, Montana,
we stopped to call on an old schoolmate, Gus Haglund, who will be remembered by
many local folks.
After leaving the park, we crossed the border into the
U.S. at Kingsgate, Idaho and followed U.S. Highways 97 and 99 through Idaho,
Washington and Oregon into California. We came past McMary and Shasta Adams,
both built for irrigation projects. In California we visited with our daughter
Iris at Bakersfield and a sister Minna at Van Nuys. We also stopped at Mrs.
Braun's brother at San Francisco and at Elmer Braun's home at Sacramento, and
visited other friends and relatives.
As we came over the Sierra mountains
at Donnor Pass, there was still snow alongside of the highway. We came through
Salt Lake City and saw the Tabernacle and Temple. Only out of state cars are
allowed to park around the Tabernacle.
The grain was ripe in Nebraska and
Iowa and combines were busy in regular fields. Corn is not much ahead of
Wisconsin.
