Horn, Duane (Letter from Germany - 1953)

While in the East Sector, we went down the main street there -- Stalin Street. It was the only part of the East Sector which had been rebuilt and it was lined with six to eight story apartment houses for the loyal party workers. There is much more I could write about that morning's tour, but for the sake of making this letter as short as possible, I'll wait a couple of months, when I can tell you in person.

We left Berlin Sunday evening about 6:45 and arrived back in Frankfurt at 8:00 Monday morning. Seeing Monday was Labor Day and our passes were good until midnight, we spent the day taking in the sights of that busy city. The Frankfurt fair was in full swing, and after quite a bit of talking we were finally allowed to go through it. This fair is somewhat different from the fairs we know. Here all the countries of Western Europe brought their best products to try and catch the eyes of prospective buyers. It was quite an affair to behold.

Well, we left Frankfurt on the 4:00 p.m. train Monday and arrived back in camp at approximately 6:30 that same evening. Seeing we only had a few hours of sleep all weekend, we were all dead tired, but thoroughly happy and satisfied with the trip. It wasn't as much of a photo paradise as the Holland trip I took last spring, but guess that was to be expected. Now if I can only get to Paris in November, I'll be happy.

Guess that about does it for my Berlin trip. As I said before, as soon as I get the pictures developed, I'll start sending the your way

Love, Duane
