Marie was born on May 5, 1926, in Thorp to Henry and Celia (Figura) Horban.
As a child of the Great Depression, Marie grew up on her family farm in Clark
County. Her strong work ethic came from her family’s beliefs and she instilled
that work ethic into her children and grandchildren. Marie was united in

Stanley. He died on November 24, 2007. They farmed the Pawelko farm at Diamond
Lake near Lublin, WI for over 60 years. Joe and Marie sold their family farm and
moved to Marshfield.
Marie had many vocations during her lifetime
including wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, waitress, gardener,
seamstress, Lublin 4-H organizer, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church choir director,
Lublin Homemakers organizer and township assessor. She had only an eighth grade
education but mastered the State of Wisconsin Assessorship exams and was an
assessor for more than 20 years. Marie was an active participant in her life,
with strong, independent ways and lived live by her own terms. She was an active
member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
She is survived by her
children: Shirley (Darrel) Shufelt of La Crosse, Steven (Bonnie) Pawelko of
Rhinelander, Daniel (Monica) Pawelko of Marshfield and Diane (Neil) Ketterling
of Lufkin, TX; six grandchildren: Doug Shufelt, Scott (Susan) Pawelko, Jennifer,
