St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Parish (Celebrates Centennial – 10 August 2014)
Bishop William Callahan of the La Crosse Diocese, along with several priests and
area deacons, were present to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the laying of
the cornerstone of the St. Bernard Catholic Church.
On the west end of Thorp stands a landmark. On August 10th, the St. Bernard-St.
Hedwig parish came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original
St. Bernard’s Church building, remembering the struggles and joys of those who
came before them, and giving thanks to God for the many blessings the parish has
received.
Bishop William Callahan celebrated the 2:00 p.m. Mass with visiting and past
clergy, nuns, parish members and out-of-town guests. The three parish choirs
collaborated on the music for the celebration. Following the Mass approximately
350 attendees were treated to an excellent chicken barbecue cooked by the Thorp
American Legion, fresh-picked sweet corn, and other seasonable produce and food
provided and prepared by parish members. It was a memorable day for all.
The adult choir, Polish choir, and children’s choir of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig
parish joined voices and provided inspirational music before and during Mass.
