Neillsville High School Depression Era Class of 1934 (50th - 1984)
The Neillsville Country Club was the May 27 setting for the 50th reunion of the
Neillsville High School Class of 1934. There were 50 in the class, 42 classmates
and their spouses attended the reunion.
This was the second reunion of this group which was recalled as the “depression
class who couldn’t even have an annual.” (The classes of 1932 and 1933 had had a
combined yearbook in order to share the expense.)
The tables were decorated in blue and silver with bouquets of lilies of the
valley symbolizing the class colors and the class flower. Handmade decorations
woven of wheat by Rebecca Goeser added to the tables.
Arne Matheson served as master of ceremonies, Dr. Rita Youmans offered a prayer
and Grace (Grow) Rutowski presented a memorial to departed classmates and
teachers. Rebecca (Haines) Goeser made and sent out the invitations, Willetta
(Wood) Heidemann served as treasurer and coordinator of the event and Myrtle
(Lipkie) Miller and Hildegarde (Toptine) Negard arranged the bouquets.
A candle was lighted for each of the now deceased classmates: Rose (Betz)
Henrich, Rovella (Handke) Quinn, Warren Hemp, William Ormond, Romuald Schmidt,
Jeanette (Schweinler) Lynch, Edna (Tews) Beyer and William Westphal.
It was noted that at the time of the 25th anniversary reunion in 1959, there had
been no deaths among the 50 classmates who graduated in 1934.
Letters from former teachers who could not attend were read by Mrs. Goeser and
Mrs. Heidemann. These were from Richard Becker of California; Mrs. Joe Van Matre
(Marie Thomas); Mrs. Mildred (Feile) Macravey and John Perkins.
Faculty guests attending were Mrs. Clem (Mabel Welch) Graf, Eau Claire; Claire
J. Winkley, Clinton; and Jake and Harriette (Getz) Hoesly, Neillsville.
Citations in the mode of “detention slips” were given for the following
accomplishments: First to respond to the invitation to the reunion, Clarence
DeCremer; Last to respond, Carl Eisentraut; coming from out of state, Dr. Rita
Youmans from Warrensburg, Missouri, Jane (Woelffer) Lind from Omaha, Nebraska,
Hildegarde (Toptine) Negard from Willoughby, Ohio, and Beulah (West) Reimer from
New Era, Michigan; Arne Matheson was cited for returning from his winter sojourn
in Arizona to be the emcee for the occasion. First married was Beulah (West)
Reimer, who plans to celebrate August 11 the golden anniversary of her marriage.

eight members of the Class of ’34 who went on to the teacher training class in
Neillsville were asked to plan the next reunion.
