Volk, Valentine #2 (12 SEP 1879 - 05 JAN 1937)*

The entire community was grieved Tuesday morning to learn of the sudden death of Val Volk.

Mr. Volk had been ill but a few days with influenza which suddenly turned into pneumonia. Oxygen tents were used and a special nurse took care of him but he quietly passed away on Tuesday morning.

Deceased was fifty-seven years of age and was a very prominent figure in Greenwood. His many friends in this community, in which practically his entire life was spent, regarded him highly for his many fine qualities of mind and heart. He was a devoted husband and his endeavors were untiring in behalf of his wife and relatives.

Deceased was born in Bavaria, Germany, 57 years ago and came to America when a young lad and made his home in Greenwood with an older brother, Jacob Volk, who taught him the tailoring trade. After his brother, Jacob died in 1912, he and his younger brother, William, became partners, continuing the business under the firm name as Volk Bros. Wm. Volk passed away June 21, 1932, since which time Val still conducted the business under the name of Volk Bros.

Mr. Volk was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Wehrman, and the couple was among the happiest and best known in the city. Mr. Volk always enjoyed the best of health until about a week ago.

His was a familiar figure and a friend to everyone who knew him. Leaving aside his profession, this man kept in touch with life and did what he could to make the lives of others, less fortunate than himself, happier and better in every way. In some way, sometime, nearly all of us have had occasion to be associated with him and knew him to be a man of sterling character and without an enemy.

As we look around us and hear and see the universal manifestations of honest grief over his passing, we cannot help but express the silent hope and prayer that our life too, when we are asked to lay it down, may be such as to inspire, in some measure, the sincere sense of loss and reverence which his passing has occasioned.

So we are inclined to memorialize thus briefly on the life of our departed friend, Val Volk, a man dear to us in both a business and personal way.

Funeral services will be held from the Reformed Church Saturday afternoon, January 9 at 2 o’clock. The business places of Greenwood will be closed during the funeral service.
