Delane. Almira Virginia (22 APR 1850 – 17 JUL 1916)
Mrs. Almira V. Delane, for many years prior to 1886, a resident of Neillsville,
died at Portland, Ore., July 17, 1916, at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 25
days. Her death occurred suddenly, due to heart failure brought on by other
complications, having suffered with nephritis for several years. The funeral was
held in Portland on July 20, services being conducted by Rev. Staub, pastor of
the Congregational Church, and the remains laid to rest in Greenwood, G.A.R.
Cemetery, beside her husband, who died a little over a year ago.
Almira Virginia Wilson was born in Elizabeth, Ill., April 22, 1850. When a
child, she moved with her parents to Black River Falls, Wis., where she
afterward tAught school. In 1868 she married James Delane. In 1873 they moved to
Neillsville where they built a home and blacksmith shop near the Catholic Church
on the north side. At a Grand Old Army reunion in Neillsville on Oct. 9, 1880,
Mr. Delane was injured by the premature firing of a cannon which necessitated
the amputation of his right arm. In 1882 they opened the Delane Hotel, corner
Fifth and Hewett, which they operated until 1890. In 1896 they moved to Spokane,
Wash., and five years ago they moved to Portland. Although she had been an
invalid for several years, she was always cheerful and had a host of friends.
She is survived by three children, W.B. Delane, of Spray, Ore., May Price Delane
of Astoria, Ore., and Mrs., J.A. (Daisy) Prudhomme of Portland, Ore., two
grandchildren, Donald and Virginia Prudhomme, and one sister, Mrs. Edith
Carpenter, Spokane, Wash., and one brother, Ernest Finney, of Spray, Ore.
