Kohl Foundation Presents Awards (2017)

The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Education Foundation Scholarship, Fellowship and Leadership program has announced recipients of the 2017 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students, teachers, and principals.

Awards in the amount of $3,000 are being made to 100 teachers, 16 principals, and their schools, and $5,000 scholarships will be given to 207 graduating students.

In the CESA 10 District, covering Clark County and the surrounding area, a number of Excellence Scholars were recognized, including Josiah Goerlitz, Owen-Withee High School; Lauren Carstensen, Medford High School; Abigail George, Mondovi High School; Emma Lauer, Eau Claire Memorial High School; Emily Schmitt, Eau Claire North High School; and Aleya Steckel, Ladysmith High School.

Initiative Scholarships were presented to Haven Tennant, Granton High School; Zakery Ingersoll, Stanley-Boyd High School; Zayne Johnson, Altoona High School; Zachary Kluge, Mondovi High School; and Seth Peterson, Chippewa Falls High School.

CESA 10 recipients of Teacher Fellowships were Travis Engel, Owen-Withee High School; Denise Swartz, Owen-Withee Elementary School; Virginia Welle, Chippewa Falls Senior High School; Julie Anderson, Bloomer High School; and Brenda Xiong, Northstar Middle School, Eau Claire.

In the CESA 5 District, Mandy Nikolai Volkman of Columbus Catholic High School in Marshfield was the recipient of a Teacher Fellowship Award.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist, and businessman, in 1990. To date, the foundation has awarded $11.5 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, and schools.

“Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers, and principals, and I look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future,” Kohl said.
