Colby, Sgt. Michael E. (Military Notes - 1972)
Sgt. Michael E. Colby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard G. Colby of Rt. 1 Abbotsford,
recently participated in a week-long field training exercise at Ft. Bragg, N.C.,
with members of the 82nd airborne division.
The exercise, called Cabal Assault II, pitted friendly and aggressor forces
against each other in action simulating an actual troop airborne assault.
Attacking reel soldiers, 1,600 troopers of the 82nd leaped from aircraft to
assist the pro-American government of the mythical country of Braggaria.
The Braggarian rebels struck back savagely, using effective tank and air
support. However, they were soon overwhelmed by the American ground troops who
were aided by elements of the air force and navy.
Sgt. Colby is a team leader in company A, 2nd battalion of the division’s 325th
Infantry. He entered the army in September, 1970, completed basic training at
Ft. Campbell, Ky, and was last stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga.
The sergeant is a 1969 graduate of Columbus High School, Marshfield, and
attended Wisconsin State University, Stevens Point.
