DeVries, Harlan C. (14 JAN 1940 – 8 FEB 2014)
Harlan C. DeVries, 74, Spencer, passed away peacefully with family at his side
on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. David DePaoli officiated. Burial followed in
Salem Cemetery in the town of Sherman, Clark County. Serving as pallbearers were
Ben DeVries, Bryan DeVries, David LaBarge, Jacob Luttropp, Korey Rajkowski,
Brenden DeVries, Hunter DeVries and Dan Rogney.
Harlan DeVries was born on Jan. 14, 1940, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Carl and
Mabel (nee Sassmann) DeVries. He graduated in Fairbank, Iowa. Following
graduation he worked on his parents' farm near Loyal in the town of Sherman. On
June 24, 1961, he married Gloria Hardy in Belvidere, Ill. Harlan and Gloria
bought his parents' farm in 1976, where they continued farming. Harlan was also
employed at the former Weyerhaeuser, now known as Marshfield Door Systems, in
Marshfield, and later worked at Fleet Farm until his retirement four years ago.
His hobbies included attending his grandkids' ball games and supporting them,
and camping in Hatfield, Dexter and Lake Wazecha. Traveling was a passion and he
took trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Branson, Alaska, Colorado and New York. Harlan
enjoyed fishing with his father and his uncle and loved driving his
International 666 tractor.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria, Spencer; his children, Russell
(Vicki) DeVries, Castle Rock, Colo., Karen (Joel) Luttropp, Spencer, Peter (Daya)
DeVries, Loyal, and Paul (Melissa) DeVries, Vesper; his grandchildren, Benjamin
(Claire) DeVries, Bryan DeVries and Emily DeVries, Megan (Dan) Rogney, Katie (Korey
Rajkowski) Luttropp, Melinda (David) LaBarge, Jacob Luttropp, Brenden and Hunter
DeVries, and Abigail, Rachel and Ryan DeVries; two great-grandchildren, Avery
and Genevieve DeVries; two step-grandchildren, Ryan and Mikaela Spalding; and
two sisters, Sharon (Earl) Gamble, Marshfield, and Nancy (Donald) Mueller,
Columbia, Mo.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Mildred Sims;
his father-in-law, Chester Hardy; and a brother-in-law, Robert Hardy.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the physicians and staff
of Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital 8 North and Palliative Care and Marshfield
Clinic Oncology Department.
