Seidel, Catherine J. (30 MAR 1916 – 6 MAR 2014)
Catherine J. Seidel, age 97, died on Thursday, March 6, 2014, surrounded by her
family at the Colby Retirement Community in Colby, WI. She was born Catherine
Josephine Cypher on March 30, 1916, on the family farm in the Town of Deer Creek
near Stetsonville, WI to Andrew & Hermine Cypher.
She married Walter Seidel on October 25, 1938, in Stetsonville. They were
married for 73 years until his death in 2012. They worked on the family farm
near Dorchester, until 1963 when they moved to Medford. She was well-known in
the area for her rag rugs, made on a loom in the basement, and for the quilts
she tied for numerous people in the area, and many that she made for herself and
family. In 2010, she and Wally moved to Colby Retirement Community, Colby, WI.
Catherine is survived by her children: Edward (Clyda) Seidel of Goleta, CA;
Dennis (Jeanette) Seidel of Colby; Raymond Seidel of Schofield; Judith (Art)
Bartnik of Wausau; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Seidel of West Allis; 11
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 step
great-grandchildren, and 3 step great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Florence
Goessl, Abbotsford; Beatrice Helfert, Colby; and Dorothy (Casimir) Sobczak, Hot
Springs Village, AR and brother-in-law: Frank Bernard, Chandler, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her parents, Andrew Cypher and
Hermine Jakel Cypher Haberman; her step-father, Henry Haberman; her son,
Richard; granddaughters Jennifer Bartnik and Jennifer Seidel; her
daughter-in-law, Ursula Seidel; brother, Clarence (Clara) Cypher; and her
sisters: Marie Berrnard & Marcella (Frank) Whittlinger, and brothers-in-law:
Nick Helfert and Clarence Goessl.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford on
Monday, March 10. Visitation is from 9:30 AM until the time of services at the
church.
The family would like to thank Leanne and her staff at Colby Retirement
Community for their loving care of our mom these past four years. We would also
like to thank Ministry Home Care Hospice for their assistance.

Former Medford area resident Catherine Josephine Seidel, 97, Colby, died
surrounded by her family on Thursday, March 6 at Colby Retirement Community in
Colby, where she had resided the past four years. Funeral Services were held on
Monday, March 10 at Holy Rosary Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger
and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Interment was at St. Mary’s cemetery in
the Town of Little Black. Pallbearers were Mike Helfert, Boyd LaPorte, Don and
Scott Seidel, and Bob and Allen Cypher.
Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with
arrangements.
The former Catherine Cypher was born on March 30, 1916 on the family farm in the
Town of Deer Creek to the late Andrew Cypher and Hermine (Jakel) Cypher Haberman.
She attended Spruce Grove Grade School in the Town of Deer Creek. She did
housework for people in the Medford area.
On October 25, 1938 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville, she was
united in marriage to Walter “Wally” Seidel, who preceded her in death on June
28, 2012. She helped with the farm work until they sold it and moved to Medford
in 1963. They moved to Colby Retirement Community in 2010.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and former G.U.G. Germania
member. She crocheted, knit, embroidered and tied quilts for people and herself,
and made rag rugs on a loom in her basement for over 25 years. She enjoyed
gardening, canning, word search puzzles, playing Scrabble, and cooking. Her
children will always remember her dill pickles, pickled fish, pies and cinnamon
rolls.
Survivors include four children, Edward (Clyda) Seidel of Goleta, Calif., Dennis
(Jeanette) Seidel of Colby, Raymond Seidel of Schofield and Judith (Art) Bartnik
of Wausau; three sisters, Florence Goessl of Abbotsford, Beatrice Helfert of
Colby and Dorothy (Casimir) Sobczak of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a
daughter-in-law, Linda Seidel of West Allis; a brother-in-law, Frank Bernard of
Chandler, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Tim (Diane) Seidel, Craig Seidel, Dr. Steven
(Bethany) Seidel, Laura (Stephen) Danna, Jane (Terry) Spooner, Scott (Becky)
Seidel, Robert (Michele) Seidel, Melissa (Boyd) LaPorte, Christopher (Anne)
Bartnik, Jeffrey (Samantha) Bartnik and Angela (Jim) Gorecki; two
step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and
three step-great-great-grandchildren.
In Addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son,
Richard; two grand-daughters, Jennifer Bartnik and Jennifer Seidel; her
step-father, Henry Haberman; a brother, Clarence Cypher; two sisters, Marie
Bernard and Marcella Whittlinger; a daughter-in-law, Ursula Seidel; and two
brother-in-law, Nick Helfert and Clarence Goessl.
