Merriman Rose (1877? – 25 MAR 1965)
At 9:30 this morning funeral services will be held at the Holy Rosary Catholic
Church for Mrs. Rose Merriman, a former Owenite (Clark Co., Wis.), who passed
away Thursday, March 25, 1965 at her home in Spokane, Wash. Father H.L. Crubel
will read the final rites with burial to be made alongside her husband, the late
Vern Merriman, who passed away in 1943.
Serving as pallbearers will be W.J. Mahoney Jr., Emery Erickson, E.W. Sutter,
J.R. Barager, Clarence and William Kitze.
The death of Mrs. Rose Merriman on March 25, 1965 in Spokane, Wash., brought to
a close a life that in the course of its 87 years touched the lives of many.
Known in this community for her school teaching and her church and community
services, Mrs. Merriman’s name and influence are written into the memories of
all the pioneers of this community.
As the bride of Vern Merriman, the former Rose Tusken of Eau Claire, moved to
the small lumbering town of Owen in 1913. After the birth of their three
children and during the teacher shortages of the First World War, Mrs. Merriman
began to teach in the school system here. Many of her students still living in
and around Owen will recall her effective teaching methods. After close to ten
years of teaching in Owen, she moved to Curtiss and then to Abbotsford with her
teaching, but their family home was retained here.
It was through her efforts that the Holy Rosary Catholic Church was greatly
aided in its establishment. Rose Merriman was organist and catechism instructor
and officer in the Altar Society during most of its formative years.
After the death of her husband in 1943 she moved to the west coast to be with
her children.
She leaves to mourn, two sons, Daniel of Sand Point, Idaho, and Bernard of Coeur
d’Alene, Idaho; a daughter, Catherine (Mrs. Gordon LeGault) of Stanley; and two
sisters, Mrs. E.A. Meuli and Mrs. Hoard McKlusky of Eau Claire. She leaves 31
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
