Volz, Gerald R. (30 November 1923 - 13 March 2014) With Flag
Gerald R. Volz, 90 of City Point died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the House of
The Dove in Marshfield under the care of Ministry Home Hospice Services.
Gerald was born Nov. 30, 1923, in the Town of Washburn, Clark County, to Robert
and Velmer (Linton) Volz. He attended Shortville Grade School. He was united in
marriage to Margaret L. Ellis Nov. 19, 1945, in Black River Falls. They were
married for over 63 years when she died Dec. 25, 2008.
Gerald farmed with his parents in the Town of Washburn prior to entering the
United States Navy. He served during World War II from June 25, 1944, until his
honorable discharge Feb. 18, 1946, on a merchant ship in the Pacific. After his
marriage to Margaret, he worked on the cranberry marsh for Loran Ellis and took
over operations of the marsh in 1950. He worked in partnership with Frank Ellis
until his retirement in 1985.
Gerald was a member of the City Point Community Church, Masonic Lodge in
Wisconsin Rapids, past supervisor for the Town of City Point, Ocean Spray
Cranberry Growers Association, City Point Volunteer Fire Department and a member
of the American Legion and VFW of Pittsville.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews from the Ellis family, who were like
his own children, Eugene (Lorraine) Ellis, Linda (Kenneth) Dallman, David
(Sandra) Ellis, Toni (Robert) Scheel and family, Tina (Scott) Ellis Coyle and
family and Nicole (Jeff) Hanutke and family, all of City Point. He is further
survived by his siblings, Wilbur (Kathleen) Volz of Orland, CA, Willis (Velda
Jean) Volz of Neillsville, Iva Lou (Roger) Anthorp of Pickerl; and a
sister-in-law, Jan Volz of Phoenix, AZ.
Besides his parents and wife Margaret, he was preceded in death by four
brothers: George, Lester, Harry and Ramond Volz; three sisters: Florence Kopp,
Marcella Adams and Delores Rosenthal; and a great nephew, Shawn Ellis.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at City Point
Community Church with Pastor Fred Parker officiating. Burial was in City Point
Community Cemetery with military honors. Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday at the Buchanan/Rembs Funeral Home in Pittsville and again Sunday from
1 p.m. until time of services.
