Wolf’s Sawmill Fire (Greenwood - 13 March 2014)
By Todd Schmidt
Wolf’s Sawmill located on Cannery Street in Greenwood was destroyed by fire
Friday evening. The call came in to the Greenwood Fire Department at
approximately 7:45 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the building was
engulfed in smoke.
Owner Dan Wolf said the fire was accidental. The possible cause was a hot ember
from a welding procedure.
The Neillsville, Granton, Thorp, Loyal and Spencer fire departments provided
mutual tanker aid. There were no injuries reported, and firefighters were on the
scene until the wee hours Saturday morning.
Fire fighting efforts were hampered by several factors, including the location
of Wolf’s Sawmill. The business is located near the end of Cannery Street, which
is a dead-end street featuring only one fire hydrant. The city of Greenwood
currently has a low water level due to residents being asked to run a continuous
stream of water to avoid frozen water lines.
Some water to fight the blaze was extracted from the Black River. That supply is
limited due to the thickness of the ice. Water was also obtained from a nearby
pond. Eventually, all sources of water were drained.
