Kevin Hanson has recently assumed duties as funeral director for Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home.

Hanson, a native of Altoona, didn’t set his sights on the career right away. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter MN and majored in phys ed with a minor in philosophy.

In 1998, Hanson headed to Milwaukee Area Technical College in West Allis for mortuary school. Two years later, he earned an apprentice license and started meeting with families and making service preparations.

Hanson graduated in May 2000 with an associate degree in mortuary science and saw the job take him around the state.

His family has settled into the area, with his wife, Teri Hanson, serving as pastor at First United Church of Christ in Colby and Christ United Church in Athens. Their daughter, Tabitha, attends high school in Colby and they are hosting Sophie Kalka, a foreign exchange student from Germany this year.

Though Hanson has taken the reigns at Marina-Schilling, Scott Maurina is still at the business and plans on sticking around. The name will stay the same.
