Intense heat from a burning barn on the Big Blue Acres farm, located four miles
east of Unity, owned by Allen Baehr, blew the top of a twenty by seventy
Harvestore structure during a fire Saturday morning.
Baehr state, 45 minutes after the blaze was discovered by his wife, Shirley, at
11 a.m., the 190 foot long dwelling housing his 70 cows, was gone. This included
a 50 foot new addition, not yet completed and uninsured.
“If I can get a contractor, I’ll rebuild this fall,” said Baehr, who estimated
the loss at $100,000. He stated it was two-third covered by insurance.
The Spencer Fire Department, aided by firefighters from Colby, stayed at the
scene until 7 p.m. Damage to a nearby machine shed was restricted to singed
shingles. But, the base of a Harvestore buckled in the heat, which became so
intense it melted the doors of an unloader. Also destroyed were 8,000 bales of
hay in the mow.
Baehr is presently milking his cows in shirts at the Alfred Gumz farm three
miles away.
