Halushka, Mr. and Mrs. John (Golden - 26 January 1972)
Mr. and Mrs. John Halushka of Rt. 1 Neillsville, observed their Golden wedding
anniversary on Wednesday, January 26. Temperatures in Clark County that day were
just as cold as the day 50 years earlier when the Halushkas were married in
Peremysl, Ukraine. On January 22, the wedding party arrived at the bride’s home
by means of sleds, with guests tucked into feather bedding as protection against
the bitter cold enroute.
John Halushka had established his own bakery business shortly after his return
from service with the Austrian Army during World War I. He continued in the
profession until World War II. After the war, the bakery was gone. To make a new
start, John and Maria Halushka and their five children immigrated to the United
States. They settled first in Piqua, O, in 1948.
Later the family moved to Chicago, Il, where Mr. Halushka continued to work in a
bakery and his wife worked in a factory in order to save toward the purchase of
a farm. Finally, in 1959, they were financially able to begin their search for
the right farm. Mrs. Halushka like the Henry Dahnert’s Town of Pine Valley farm,
which the couple subsequently purchased. A year later, they moved from Chicago
to their new farm home located about two miles south of Neillsville.
John Halushka, in spite of his 80 years, is still active in gardening, raising
cucumbers and beekeeping, and even chops his own firewood. Maria Halushka loves
her flower gardens, where she spends much of her time during the growing season.
She also raises chickens for the family’s use.
The Halushkas have frequent visitors; their five children and 13 grandchildren
come often to spend vacations on the farm. The oldest (sorry the balance of our
story is missing.)
