UCC New Pastor, Rev. Mark Voll (1984)

Taking over the pulpit at the Neillsville United Church of Christ this past week was the Rev. Mark Voll.

Voll replaces the Rev. Gary Clark, who served the Neillsville congregation for 12 years and who is now serving Zion UCC in Sheboygan.

The Neillsville charge is the second for Voll in his ministerial career. After graduating from theological school he served as pastor of a UCC congregation at St. Germain in northeast Wisconsin. He was there for five years.

The Neillsville congregation will be a much larger one than Voll served in St. Germain. Neillsville’s UCC has just under 600 members. Voll’s first church had 189 members. But Voll isn’t adverse to growth—when he came to St. Germain the church had only 80 members.

The 30-year-old pastor is a native of Fond du Lac but spent his growing years in Dolton, Illinois, where his father was a UCC pastor. He attended Lakeland College in Sheboygan, earning a BA degree in vocal music education. He then attended United Theological Seminary in New Brighton, Minnesota.

His 28-year-old wife, Sue, is a native of Port Washington and attended Lakeshore Technical Institute where she studied in the medical assistant program.

Newest member of the family is adopted daughter Katie, who will turn 4-months this week.

Also adjusting to their new residence on Clay Street is Sandy, the family’s dog.

Elmhorst, Jane Ann (1973 - 1984)

Services were held Saturday afternoon at the Neillsville City Cemetery for Jane Ann Elmhorst, the 11-year-old daughter of Paul and Shirley Elmhorst, Rt. 4 Neillsville, who died sometime last Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. She was pronounced death at about 7:15 Thursday morning by Clark County Coroner Robert Lulloff, who ruled the cause to be accidental asphyxiation from a fire in the cab of a disabled semi-tractor parked in the family’s farm yard.

Paul Elmhorst found the body at about 6:45 a.m. and called authorities. Elmhorst told investigating officers it was not unusual for one or more of his children to sleep in the sleeper portion of the tractor during the summer, and that a candle was sometimes used to provide light. Jane left the house at about 10:30 p.m., taking a candle and some school books with her. It is believed that as the girl was using the candle, it ignited some bedding.

“She had made an effort to escape but collapsed inside near the driver’s side door,” Lulloff said.

The fire charred some bedding and portions of the interior of the sleeper were burned, however, the fire apparently extinguished itself from a lack of oxygen. The cab had been closed tight because of cool temperatures. The girl suffered burns abo0ut the face, arms and legs, according to Lulloff.

Jane Elmhorst had been a student at Granton Elementary School. She is survived by her parents and nine brothers and sisters. The Elmhorst farm is located on North Fork Road in the Town of Grant.
