The 1897 Clark County Jail Museum (Meeting - Mar 2014)
Following the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports, president Steve Roberts
reported on the Old Photo Day Open House during the Winter Carnival. A steady
stream of people visited the museum that afternoon to view old school yearbooks,
family photos and pictures of businesses from the old days. Meeting guests also
discussed the planned computer update, a grant application and the schedule for
cleaning house before opening for the summer season. Everyone pitches in to
dust, vacuum and clean the floors. Anyone who is interested may come in at their
convenience (call first) during April and do a single room completely or the
same job in several rooms. Cobwebs sure grow during the winter!
During Heritage Days in July, plans are to be open both Saturday and Sunday
afternoons to the public. There may be available t few striped prisoners’ suits
for visitors to pose for pictures in one of the cells.
New donations to the museum are some family photos and postcards from Bonnie
Koeberl and Tarra B.
Anyone with roots in the local area is encouraged to share photos of family
members or businesses, including photos from the 1950s through 1990s. Sunday
afternoons or by appointment, the photos can be scanned and then returned. When
the original pictures are returned, a digital copy will be provided as well.
Board and member meetings are always held on the first Tuesday of each month at
7 p.m. at 215 E. 5th St. in Neillsville. Those interested in volunteering time
or talents, or if interested in doing some local history or family research,
call or email for more information.
