Erickson, Pvt. Walter W. (Military Notes - 1972)
Pvt. Walter W. Erickson, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Erickson of Rt. 2
Withee, recently completed the first phase of training under the modern
volunteer army field experiment at Ft. Ord, Ca. The new concept, called VOLAR,
combines basic and advanced individual training into a single 16-week program.
Decentralized instruction at the unit level and a reduction of formations and
inspections gives the soldier more time to train and increased off-duty time.
Fewer restrictions on off-duty travel and improved living facilities are other
benefits of the VOLAR concept.
Pvt. Erickson received his training with Company D, 5th battalion, 3d brigade.
He is a graduate of Owen-Withee high school.
