Schunk, Ed Jr. (Barn Fire - 27 NOV 1966)
Fire of undetermined origin late Sunday afternoon destroyed a barn on the farm
of Ed Schunk Jr. in Worden Township (Clark Co., Wis.), 8 1/2 miles southwest of
Thorp, killing 34 head of milk cows and a number of head of young livestock.
The owner was not home at the time. Mrs. Schunk discovered the blaze about 5
p.m., but said she was unable to put through a call to the Thorp Fire Department
because of constant busy signals on the line, presumably caused by persons
trying to establish the location of the fire.
A neighbor finally succeeded in getting through an emergency call, which brought
the Thorp Fire Department to the scene.
Other than the barn and its contents, and the animals, the loss included a milk
house. There was no estimate of the amount of the loss.
The barn had been constructed about 8 years ago to replace a structure which had
been destroyed in a wind storm.
