Hazuga, John A. (1 Jun 1906 - 26 NOV 1966)

A Thorp man is believed to have died instantly Saturday when a tree fell on him in the town of Hallie.

John A. Hazuga, 60, Rt. 2, Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), was assisting a son-in-law, Charles Lien, in logging work at the rural Chippewa Falls farm.

The victim reportedly was cutting a pin which was supporting another pin, which was felled Friday. When the tree Hazuga was cutting toppled, the other 40-foot white pine fell on him.

Investigation were Dr. Clifford Bowe, Cadott, County Coroner, and James I. Cardinal, chief deputy.

John Andrew Hazuga, 60, died at the farm of his son-in-law in the town of Hallie, Chippewa County by being struck by a falling tree while logging on Saturday, Nov. 26th, 1966.

Mr. Hazuga was born June 1, 1906 at Stanley, Wis. He lived on the family farm on his of his parents until the time of his marriage, June 13, 1934, to Catherine Mertens at St. Bernard's Church, Thorp. They then moved to a farm five miles northwest of Thorp, where he has since resided.

Funeral services were held at St. Bernard's Church, Thorp on Tuesday, Nov. 29th. Father Michael G. Mertens, La Cross, brother-in-law of the deceased, officiated, and burial was in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Arnold, Alan, Larry and Donald Hazuga, Michael Driessen and John Weix.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Hazuga; two sons, John Jr. and Jerome, at home; three daughters, Mrs. William (Kathleen) Rissinger, Wis. Rapids; Mrs. Charles (Lorraine Lien, Chippewa Falls, Marlene Hazuga of Marshfield; three brothers, Robert and William Hazuga, both of Stanley, Edward Hazuga, South Milwaukee; four sisters, Mrs. Sylvester (Mary) Driessen, of Stanley, Mrs. Carl (Sophie) Franz, Madison, Mrs. Joseph (Ida) McGakey of Bellwood, Ill., Helen Hazuga of Oak Park, Ill., and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Donna Rissinger.
