Albert Davel will celebrate his 94th birthday on Halloween,Thursday, October 31.
He is in fairly good health despite his failing eyesight. Although he has had to
curtail his daily attendance at Mass and his twice daily walk down town because
of his sight, he remains alert and interested in all local and world news. He is
an avid baseball and football fan.
Albert Davel was born in Germany, Oct. 31, 1874, the eldest of five sons of Mr.
and Mrs. John Davel. As an infant he came with his parents to the United States
and the family settled in Spencer. He graduated from Spencer schools and the
attended Valparaso University in Indiana. He started the Davel store in Loyal in
1907 and his brother George started the Davel store in Stratford. In 1947 he
sold the store to his son Lawrence who continued to operate it until May of this
year when he retired.
He was married October 8, 1902 to the former Florence Baker of Seymour at St.
Anthony's church in Loyal. The couple recently celebrated their 66th wedding
anniversary.
Mr. Davel served as Village President and also as Village Treasurer. He was a
member of the Volunteer Fire Department and is still an honorary fireman. He is
a member of St. Anthony's church and the Knights of Columbus which he joined in1
915, becoming a member of the Fourth Degree in 1920. He is also affiliated with
the Holy Name Society.
The Davels are parents of 11 children; Lawrence, city clerk and assessor of
Loyal; Edward, a civil engineer in Chicago; Paul, executive vice president of
the Citizen's State Bank of Loyal; Mrs. Fred (Evelyn) Noland, Minneapolis; Mrs.
Scott (Marie) Canney, Algoma; Mrs. Al (Gertrude) Phair, Oshkosh; Miss Martina
Davel, Chicago; Mrs. James (Kathryn) Babb, Orlando, Florida; Mrs. Lucian
(Madeline) Krawczky, Puladki; Mrs. William (Jane) Simpson, Minneapolis; and Mrs.
Al (Dorothy) Schmook, Madison.
They have 37 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
