Smith, Dorothy L. (20 MAY 1918 - 31 MAY 2014)
Dorothy L. Smith, 96, Colby, formerly of Greenwood, passed away peacefully on
Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Colonial Center, Colby. Graveside services will
be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 28, at the Loyal Cemetery. Rev. Patsy Roe
will officiate.
Dorothy Lillian Duell was born on May 20, 1918, in the township of Weston, a
daughter of Anna (nee Flaherty) and Frank Duell. She was raised on the family
farm northeast of Loyal and received her education at area schools, graduating
from Loyal High School in 1936. Dorothy then moved to Chicago, where she worked
for a couple years. She married Henry A. Smith on June 28, 1949, at the Loyal
United Methodist Church. They lived in Greenwood, where Dorothy worked for many
years at the Greenwood Farmer's Store and later for Decker's Grocery Store until
her retirement. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Greenwood.
In her spare time, Dorothy loved playing cards, going to the casino, shopping,
and getting her hair done every week.
She is survived by one sister, Verle String, Jefferson; and several nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry, on Jan. 14, 1989;
and three brothers, Merlin "Pat" Duell, Kenneth Duell and Adelbert Duell.
