Neillsville-Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran (Hosts Mission Festival - 2023)
Globe Church Holds Mission Festival
By June Thompson
When it comes to supporting people in need, it is churches, pastors and
congregations that make it their mission to provide help to individuals or
groups of people that need financial assistance and spiritual support.
Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe recently hosted their annual
Mission Festival Oct. 29. This event welcomed guest speaker, Pastor Daniel
Lindner. The pastor spoke of helping young people stay connected to God and
their community after they leave home to pursue college or military careers. His
personal mission is campus ministries.
With 43 campus ministries, Pastor Nathan Wilke called Lindner a “missionary for
young people.”
Wilke has known Lindner since 1992.
“We went to high school and college together,” Wilke said.
Linder’s goal is to bring awareness to what is going on in the synod and what he
can do for kids going to college.
Wilke would like his congregation to “learn something new from God’s kingdom,
and support others who do the [ministry] work.”
Wilke is thankful to the congregation for their generosity and hopes the college
kids stay connected to God. He and the confirmation class have plans to send
care packages to the college kids. There are four members of the Immanuel
Lutheran congregation in college.
The annual Mission Festival, held Oct. 29, has been held longer than most people
know. Over a hundred people attended this traditional service that has been
ongoing yearly and included a dinner meal prepared by the Ladies Guild.
Lana Ormond, church member for more than 70 years, was one of many ladies
preparing the meal.
“We donate to missions/charities,” Ormond said.
There are two different mission/charities that receive donations from the
Mission Festival. The visiting pastor selects a mission/charity, and the Ladies
Guild chooses a charity.
“One year, we donated to a church family in need,” Ormond said.
She has always been in the Ladies Guild. The goal of the Ladies Guild is to
raise extra money to do projects.
Bonnie Thoma, lifelong church member and president of the Ladies Guild, stated
there were donations received for the Mission Festival meal.
“IGA donated 60 lbs. of carrots, Schmitty’s on Main donated the beef tips,”
Thoma said.
Members of the Ladies Guild donated food and their time preparing the meal.
All the support and donations for charities given from congregations, community
members and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is ongoing. The Ladies Guild’s goal
is to have support and raise a good amount of money for mission charities.

Smiling for Samuel Foundation (Walk - 2023)
The Smi ling for Samuel Foundation hosted its fourth year of the Walk to
Remember Oct. 14 to commemorate founders Lee and Sierra Strangfeld’s son, Samuel
Lee, who lived a short life of three hours. The foundation was started to help
them to come to terms with their son’s passing, help them heal from the tragedy,
bring awareness of T-18 to others and help support and offe3r guidance to other
parents dealing with infant loss. “I’m excited to see our event getting bigger
each year, especially with the number of those out-of-state friends and family
who travel to join us,” Sierra Strangfeld said. There were two routes 3k and 5 k
to walk. Participants were given white carnations to either take home or place
in the monument’s crib. Sierra Strangfeld, with her niece, welcomed all
participants, explaining where to begin, the two routes available and to gather
at the “I knew You in the Womb” monument in the cemetery at the end. Lindsay
Stump and Sierra Strangfeld were the first to arrive at the cemetery.
(Four Photos by Nancy Curtin/Clark County Press were shown from the event.)

Johnson, LeRoy Edwin (11 May 1949 – 5 November 2023)
LeRoy Edwin Johnson, 74, of Owen, died November 5, 2023, peacefully at home with
his wife and Hope Hospice nurse Kelsey at his side after a valiant battle
against cancer.
LeRoy was born on May 11, 1949, to Elmer and Phyllis Johnson in Wisconsin Rapids
at Riverview Hospital. LeRoy graduated from Lincoln High School, Wis Rapids in
1967. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Eugene A. Greene as a boiler man.
LeRoy met his future wife at JC Penney in Marshfield. There was a store policy
against associates dating; Leroy went out the back door, Janine out the front
and they met at a fast food joint for lunch. They were married on September 28,
1974, at the Colby United Methodist Church.
When the Rapids Mall was built, LeRoy was chosen to manage the men's department.
He later sold cars for Brostrom-Kickert in WR, and M&H Chevrolet in Medford. He
spent his final years before retirement at Marathon Cheese. LeRoy had a great
love of cars. For many years he took pictures for the WR Daily Tribune of short
track and Nascar races. After a trip to Pocono where the spectators stood the
whole race, Janine said that was enough in person racing for her. LeRoy helped
Tyler with his go kart racing by hauling the kart on the back of the little red
Chevy truck. On a flower shopping expedition Janine spotted a 1954 Chevy Belair
for sale. LeRoy jumped at the chance and that began many years of car shows,
some awards and a new “family” of car enthusiasts. “Big Papa” always had a beer
ready to share with friends. LeRoy wasn't one to show a great deal of emotion,
but the smirk on his face said it all. LeRoy was the commander of the American
Legion Post #9, bowled on several league teams, shot pool every chance he got
and had a HUGE collection of racing memorabilia.
The past few years of his life, LeRoy taught us that care giving is a very
important job, that family and friends make the burden lighter, and that our
ability to give and accept love is not diminished even though our physical
health might be.
Survivors include his wife, Janine of Owen; his mother, Phyllis (Paul) Waterman
of Marshfield; his mother-in-law, Marlene Benjegerdes of Colby; his stepsister,
Michelle Seebruck of Pittsville; two nephews and one niece. Missing him greatly
are his children, Aimee (Travis) Haakenson of Medford and Tyler (Ailea) Johnson
of Batesville, AK. He is further survived by four grandchildren: Shaynea (Tim
Snyder) of Abbotsford, Vance Haakenson, Audree Haakenson of Medford and Nakiaya
Johnson of Batesville. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Axel Emmerich of
Abbotsford.
He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson, Aspen.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 2023, at
Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.
until time of service on Friday. Military Honors will be provided by the Colby
VFW Post #2227.

Treffert, Roger Walter (2 November 1933 – 6 November 2023)
Roger Treffert, 90, of Curtiss, passed away peacefully under the care of
Heartland Hospice, on Monday, November 6th, 2023, in Colby.
Roger was born on November 2nd, 1933, in Wausau to Walter and Leona Treffert. He
grew up in Menomonee Falls, and graduated from Menomonee Falls High School in
1951.
Roger married Diane Dietsch in August of 1953 and they resided in Pewaukee,
where they raised three sons: Randy, Raymond, and Ralph. During his time in
Pewaukee, he was a Machinist at Milwaukee Hydraulics.
In 1971, Roger and Diane purchased a Dairy Farm and moved their family of five
to Curtiss, where Roger would live for the next 50 years of his life. Roger
enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking, but his favorite hobby of all was
milking cows. Roger’s best work was being a Dairy Farmer, and he dedicated
himself to this career for 26 years.
In 1997, Roger sold his cows to end his profession as a dairy farmer and became
a CNA. He also developed an interest in Real Estate and obtained his Real Estate
License.
Roger was very dedicated to his Christian faith and enjoyed reciting and
teaching others the word of God. Roger was a devoted member of St. Peter
Lutheran Church in Dorchester, where he sat in the same church pew for several
decades.
Roger was stable, strong, and passionate about his work and past times. He was a
devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was also known for having great
hair and a perfectly trimmed beard. Roger enjoyed crafting puzzles, fidgets, and
gadgets using everyday objects around the farm, and enjoyed watching others
attempt to solve the puzzles he’d build. When he wasn’t engineering new ideas or
milking cows, Roger could be found in the woods on his Curtiss property,
chopping wood for his stove, and finding new trails to explore. He was a
captivating storyteller and loved spending time with his grandkids, teaching
them about life on the farm. His family loved hearing him play his concertina,
and his dog loved to howl along.
Roger is survived by his sons: Raymond (Cindy) Treffert of Stanley, and Ralph (Feleicia)
Treffert of Spencer, grandchildren Amber (Jeriame) Czubakowski, Brianne (Mike)
O’Brien, Caitlin (Scott) Dahl, and Holly Kirker (Alex Harrellson), and
