Lamont, Angus D. (3 JUN 1920 - 23 JUN 2014)

Angus Donald Lamont passed away on Monday, June 23, with family members present. Angus, known as "Angie" or "Bud," was born to Angus Edgar Lamont and Mary Katherine (Katy Riplinger) Lamont on June 3, 1920, in Colby. He attended the country school located near the family farm 1 1/2 miles south of Colby. Angus later attended St. Mary's Grade School and Colby High School.

In 1942, Angus served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he became known as "Gus." He was stationed in northern Africa and Italy for the duration of the war. The high point of his tour in Italy was the opportunity to meet Pope Pius XII, and kiss the Papal ring. Angus was discharged in 1945, at which time he returned home to Colby. Angus and his father operated the Lamonts' Service Station in Colby for many years.

On November 16, 1946, Angus married Virginia Firnstahl at St. Mary's Church in Colby. Together they celebrated over 66 years of marriage, lovingly sharing all aspects of their lives with each other. In 1959, he became a rural mail carrier, becoming friends with the many people for whom he delivered mail. Angus retired in 1982, after twenty-three years of service. Angus also worked part-time at the Colby Box Board, which later became the Packaging Corporation of America.

Angus was an active member of the Colby community. He was a volunteer fireman, an ambulance driver, a religious education teacher, and an active member and officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, as well as other community and church organizations. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, camping, and collecting and growing a variety of hosta plants.

Angus is survived by his five children: Kathy (Jim) Harris of Bear Valley, Mary (David) Enright of Port Washington, Donna (Craig) Marvin of Des Moines, Peg (Dr. Tim) Harvey of Greenwood, and Michael Lamont of Madison; eight grandchildren: Jodi (Brian) Clarson, Molly Harris, Megan (Nic) Jacoby, Mike (Rachel) Enright, Taylor Marvin, Kevin Marvin, Logan Marvin; and four great-grandchildren: Mike Clarson, Chelsea Clarson, Brady Clarson, and Kennedy Enright. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, his parents (Angus and Katy Lamont), two brothers (Donald and Malcolm), one sister (Katherine Cattanach), an infant granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law (Anne Lamont).

Angus will be remembered for his love of family, life, and learning. He had a keen sense of humor, which he maintained until his final days. Angus had a way of bringing smiles to people's faces. He touched many lives. He will be missed dearly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby. Father Daniel Hackel will officiate. A visitation will be held Friday, June 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Colby with a Rosary Service at 4 p.m. and again from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. Military Honors provided by the Colby VFW Post #2227.
