Schmalz, Rev. John (1888-1908) Pastorate served*
REV. SCHMALZ, LONG PASTORATE ON THE WEST SIDE
Rev. J. Schmalz after serving twenty years and five months in the Emmanuel’s Church of the West Side, preached his farewell sermon Oct. 4th, his text being 1st Cor. 2:2, “for I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ and him crucified.”
After services the Lord’s Supper was served and a collection of $27.20 was taken for the mission house of which Rev. Schmalz was a student. He presented his Sunday school scholars with Sunday School cards and church members with a little book entitled “Gott befohlen” and “trust in God.”
The choir and some of the other young people presented their pastor with a writing cabinet valued at $6.85 and some cash. Fred Buker handed him a gift of $42.75 in cash which the church members had donated. He also received personal gifts of from one to ten dollars.
Mrs. Schmalz also received remembrances, from flower slips up to silk waists. Some had put their presents in the empty house so they would not know from whom they came.
The ladies society of the Zion’s Church of Greenwood presented him with one dozen silver teaspoons and five dollars in cash.
The German Ladies Society of the West Side surprised Rev. Schmalz and wife on their twentieth wedding anniversary and presented them with a nice table cloth and a set of sliver knives and forks.
