Nye, Marcella O. (Mertens) (20 MAR 1919 - 8 JUL 2014)

Former Rib Lake area resident Marcella O. Nye, 95, Wittenberg, died on Tuesday, July 8 at Homme Home in Wittenberg, where she had resided the past four months.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Rib Lake.

Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

The former Marcella Mertens was born on March 20, 1919 in Thorp, to the late Oscar and Catherine (Heiman) Mertens. She attended St. Bernard's Catholic Church School in Thorp.

On May 3, 1939 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, she married Manford William Nye, who preceded her in death on January 20, 1996. They farmed in the Thorp area until moving to the Rib Lake area in 1947, where they farmed until moving into the Village of Rib Lake. She worked as a gluer for Gem Products Shoe Factory in Rib Lake for 20 years, then at Rib Lake Health Care Center for two years. She has resided in Antigo since 2008.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and past member of its Christian Mothers. She enjoyed walking.

Survivors include two children, Ronald (Myra) Nye of Antigo and Lois (Roman) Lamberty of Jasper, Texas; three brothers, Bernard (Mary Ann) Mertens and Robert (Rosaile) Mertens, both of Thorp, and Father Michael Mertens of La Crosse; three sisters, Margaret Slowiak and Delores Techmeir, both of Stanley, and Theresa Westberg of Altoona; a granddaughter Nikki Lamberty of Texas; and special goddaughter, Bernadine Nitz of Neenah.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Shannon Lamberty, and six siblings, Catherine Hazuga, Helen Koenig, Ruth Weix, Marie Weix and Francis and Hugo Mertens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Good Shepherd Catholic Church or the Rib Lake Fire Department.
