Baker, Mr./Mrs. Lester (Gold – 23 FEB 1966)
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Baker were honored at an open house at the Harvard Moose
Hall in observance of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Their daughters and
sons were the hosts. About four hundred relatives and friends were present.
Beautiful gifts and money were presented to the honored guests.
Gladys Storey, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Storey, who lived in the town
of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), and Lester, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Baker, who
homesteaded land in the town of Thorp, were married on Feb. 23, 1916 at the
Presbyterian Parsonage in Stanley, Wis., with Rev. Orvis officiating. Mr. and
Mrs. Dan Chisamore from Stanley, now residing in Evansville, Wis., were their
attendants.
The Bakers resided in Thorp until 1940, when they moved to Sharon. Lester has
been in construction business all of his life and heads the L.E. Baker
Construction company in Sharon.
The Bakers have nine children: Irwin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Howard (Marcelain)
Brown of Delavan; Mrs. Dick (Joan) Mattoon of Fort Atkinson; Gaylon of
Titusville, Florida; Living in Sharon includes: Keith, Calvin, Mrs. Eddie (Veryl)
Miller, Mrs. (Bernice) Techmeier, Mrs. Jerome (Betty) Fredericks. The Bakers
also reared their grandson (Buch) Erwin Baker, who also lives in Sharon. They
have 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A mock wedding (participants were friends and the children of the couple) was
enjoyed by all. Also participating were two of their grandchildren, Mrs. Sherry
Lou Brunner, playing the accordion and Butch Baker sang several songs. Excellent
music was furnished for dancing.
Refreshments were served. Mrs. Katherine Hopper from Beloit cut the beautiful
wedding cake. Mrs. Mary Ruffalo of Delavan made the cake. Mrs. Emma Platter from
Denver, Colorado, cousin of the bride, was in charge of the guest book.
Guests came from Denver, Colo., Milwaukee, Gilman, Jump River, Fort Atkinson,
Lake Koskonon, Janesville, Beloit, Jefferson, Lake Mills, Edgerton, Clinton,
Chicago, Ill. And Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Baker enjoy sports and annually make fishing and hunting trip
to northern Wisconsin.
