Whitcomb, F.W. (Fred) (23 FEB 1839 – 4 Sep 1916)
F.W. Whitcomb was born at Ithaca, N.Y., Feb. 23, 1839. Died at the home of his
daughter at Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 4, 1916, aged 75 years, 6 months and 11 days.
He came to Wisconsin in 1843 and located at Kenosha, then called South Port, and
went from there to Dodge County in 1846 and learned telegraphy in 1855,
following that profession for the greater part of his life. He was employed on
the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad at different points until 1869 when
he went to work for the Omaha. He was stationed at Humbird in 1861, then to
Cumberland, Cable and Ashland, coming to this city in 1881. He worked here until
he was retired by the railroad company as a pension man for long and faithful
service, and was one of the oldest employees of the Omaha in point of service.
Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity for many years, being one of the
charter members of the Neillsville commandery and having taken great interest
all his life in fraternal work. He was a true brother, a faithful employee at
all times and always upright and conscientious in his dealings with his fellow
man. He was elected city clerk of this city last spring, but failing health
forced him to resign and he went to Lincoln in August to make his home with his
daughter, Ruth. He felt the death of his wife most keenly and the attendant
lonesomeness did much to add to his failing strength. He is survived by three
children, Grace, Ruth and Hugh.
The remains were brought from Lincoln and burial was made at Augusta on Friday
at the side of his wife. The services were conducted by the Masonic fraternity
and by Rev. Longenecker and the earthly remains of a good and faithful man were
consigned to their last resting place, surrounded by the friends and brothers he
loved so well during life.
