Anason, Joseph (Grad - 2023)

This past spring, Joseph Anason of Neillsville graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Anason earned a bachelor’s degree of science in accounting and was also named to the university’s dean’s list.

To make the dean’s list, students must have earned at least 12 credits for the spring 2023 semester and have no disqualifying grades.; The grade-point average (GPA) threshold varies by college—for the college of education and the Klingler college of arts and sciences undergraduate students must have at least 3.7 to be named to the dean’s list.

The undergraduate CPA requirement of 3.5 for the following colleges: the Diederich college of communication, the college of business of health sciences, the Opus college of engineering and the college of nursing. All other programs have a 3.75 GPA minimum.

Cla4rk Co—UW-Oshkosh (Dean’s List - 2023)

UW-Oshkosh officials have released the names of students who qualified for the dean’s list and honor roll in spring 2023 across its three campuses (Fond du Lac, Fox Cities and Oshkosh).

The term grade-point average (GPA) requirement for university honor roll is 3.3; the term GPA requirement for dean’s list is 3.75 out of a possible 4.0.

To qualify a student must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits. There can be no individual grades below a “C” and no incomplete or non-reported grades at the time the process is run.

Students from Clark County who made the dean’s list were Sierra Koski of Loyal, Ellie Moseid of Neillsville and Hannah Hazard of Thorp.

Kunkel, Louis William (4 December 1939 – 31 May 2023)

Louis William Kunkel, age 83, passed peacefully in the arms of his family on the evening of May 31, 2023. Louis was born December 04, 1939, in Boone County, Ky, to Joseph and Anna Kunkel. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by Ann his wife, and daughter, Judy (Doug) Gulcynski. He was raised on a dairy and tobacco farm in Union, Ky. He met the love of his life, Ann Duncan, at St. Henry High School in Kenton County, Ky. Louis Married Ann on May 7, 1960, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Edgewood, Ky. Together they had five children and resided in Union, Ky until April 1974 when the family moved to Thorp/ Greenwood, WI. This is where his dream of becoming a dairy farmer became a reality.

Louis was an amazing man; he loved his family and his farm. He had tremendous zest for life and loved all living things. His honesty, kindness, and generosity were unparalleled. His strength and love of life allowed him to tackle a long and difficult battle with blood cancer (Multiple Myeloma) and a stem cell transplant, and he maintained remission for the remainder of his life. In addition to raising his children with Ann, they also raised dairy cattle, sows, horses, chickens, sheep and ducks. Louis was an extremely hard worker, and even his hobbies involved working. His favorite pastime was house remodeling and building additions onto the farmhouse. Louis was an accomplished welder and repairman which was a great asset on the farm. In their later years Louis and Ann enjoyed traveling and spending time with family in their RV. Louis was very saddened by the loss of his beloved Ann on April 3, 2023. They are now reconnected in heaven along with daughter Judy.

Louis is survived by his children, Dan (Jeannie) Kunkel, Pam (Larry) Miller, Amy (Chris) Kamholz and Ron (Allison) Kunkel; grandchildren, Jeremy (Lisa) Gulcynski, Cassie Gulcynski, Ross Gulcynski, Sherri (Nick) Raley, Andrew Kunkel, Cory Kaplanek, Jessica (Matt) Beil, Nicole Kamholz, CJ Kamholz, William Kunkel, Samuel Kunkel and Maxwell Kunkel; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Jacob, Bella, Evie, Owen, Grace, Sophia, Benjamin and Willow.

Mass for Louis will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Florence, Ky Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 11:55 A.M. following mass will be interment at Mother Of God Cemetery in Covington, Ky. Lunch and sharing of memories to follow.

Meier, William L. “Bill” (12 April 1937 – 18 June 2023)
William "Bill" L. Meier, age 86, of Neillsville, died on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the Clark County Living and Rehabilitation Center.

William Lee Meier was born on April 12, 1937, in Neillsville, the son of William and Lillian (Kaddatz) Meier. He attended St. John's Elementary School and was a member of the first class to graduate from the new Neillsville High School in 1955. On October 17th, 1959, he was united in marriage to Virginia Winter. He worked for a short time at the Condensery plant which was located where the current fire station is. Bill then got a job working for Bake-Rite, a wholesale bakery located in Stevens Point in the sales department. They lived there for just over a year before moving to Tomahawk in 1966. They lived there for 10 years when Bill transitioned from the bakery business to working in the grocery store industry. In 1976 a new grocery store was being built in Neillsville and he obtained a job there. He heard the call to come back to the town he loved so much. In the summer of 1976 he moved his family back to Neillsville. He worked in the grocery industry a few more years and then went to work as an insurance representative for AAL. Bill earned several awards for sales excellence and even earned a trip to Hawaii in the spring of 1981. He left the insurance industry and finished his fulltime working career at the Buyer's Guide, selling ads for the weekly paper.

Once he retired, he began driving taxi for the city of Neillsville. He was elected Mayor of Neillsville for one term and served several terms on the city council. He was very active in the Lion's Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones award, which is the highest honor a member can obtain. Bill was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He loved a good game of sheepshead, dirty clubs, euchre, cribbage, pinochle-you get the point. Sundays in the fall were set aside for the Green Bay Packers. He talked about them all year and couldn't wait until the season started. Most of all he loved his family and rarely missed significant events. He would be the first one there and the last to leave.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Virginia, 4 children; Bradley (Sandra) Meier, Donna Meier, both of Neillsville, Douglas (Lisa) Meier of Fertile, MN and Darrell (Ruth Ann) Meier of Two Rivers, 6 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren, a sister, Elaine (Chuck) Glassbrenner of Neillsville, a brother-in-law, Roger (Dawn) Winter of Janesville, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Allen (Margie) Meier and a sister-in-law, Dolly (Bud) Rechsteiner.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 7, 2023, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Pastor Timothy Biebert will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Friday morning also at the church. A private family burial will be held at Zion American Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Pohlman, Rodney R. “Rod” (29 November 1963 – 19 June 2023)

Rodney “Rod” R. Pohlman, age 59, of Owen, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 19, 2023, at the Marshfield Medical Center.

Rod was born on November 29, 1963, the son of Robert and Karen (Beckman) Pohlman in Madison. He graduated from Colby High School. On May 4, 1984, Rod was united in marriage to Renee Foster. He farmed, drove milk truck for Stuart Mews and drove truck for the past 23 years for Wisco Feeds.

Rod enjoyed gardening, deer and turkey hunting, fishing, listening to Johnny Cash and George Jones, watching the Packers, Brewers, Badgers and NASCAR and collecting toy tractors. He especially loved driving his Wisco “Papa” truck. Rod enjoyed his coffee at Jackie’s at O-W Sports in Owen then going for rides. He was goofy, quirky and a jokester. He connected with everyone and especially loved talking to all his farmer friends on his route and hanging out with his Wisco family. Most importantly, Rod loved and cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Rod is survived by his wife of 39 years, Renee; three children: Rhonda (Christopher) Reinhart of Marshfield, Rosie (Josh) Zastrow of Kronenwetter, and Rebecca Pohlman (Roger Hattamer) of Loyal; seven grandchildren: Michael and Kaitlynn Reinhart, Koda and Bentley Zastrow, McKayla Hattamer (fiancé, Kyle Mork), Weston and Makenzie Hattamer. He is further survived by his parents, Robert and Karen Pohlman of Owen; three siblings: Kim (Dale) Williams of Stetsonville, Curt (Mary) Pohlman of Loyal and Dawn (Kenny) Schmitt of Cadott; Aunts, Uncles, nieces, nephews, his Wisco Feeds Family, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Curtiss. Family and friends are welcome from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30 and from 10:00 a.m. until time of service Saturday all at the funeral home.

Rose, Donnie L. (16 April 1936 – 17 June 2023) With Flag

Donald L. Rose, 87, of Spencer, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the Colonial Center in Colby under the care of St. Croix Hospice.

Donnie was born on April 16, 1936, in Wisconsin; the son of Glen and Dorothy (Weiland) Rose. He attended Granton High School. On October 2, 1954, he was united in marriage to Margie Martin in Bakerville. Two days later, he was enlisted in the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his honorable discharge in September of 1956. He was employed as a production supervisor for local mobile home manufacturer and farm equipment manufacturer at Multi Assembly in Chili as well as Roth Manufacturing in Loyal.

Donnie enjoyed watching and playing baseball, camping and fishing. He liked to work in carpentry and make small wood items. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Spencer.

Those who will cherish his memory include his sister, Mary Ann Bymers of Spencer; his sisters-in-law, Berdie Rose of Spencer, Mary Kilth of Edgar, Barb Mechelke of Loyal, Theresa Schwantes of Marshfield and Helen Beaver of Colby; her brothers-in-law, Dan Martin of Spooner, John Schiferl of Washington and Joseph Pernsteiner of Black River Falls and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Dorothy Rose; his beloved wife, Margie Rose; his brothers, Erlin, Duane and Robert Rose; his sisters, Janet Schiferl and Betty Pernsteiner and his brother-in-law, Joey Martin.

Marlene (Aldinger) Dayton 91 of Neillsville died Saturday June 17, 2023, at the House of the Dove in Marshfield.

Marlene (Aldinger) Dayton was born May 30, 1932, in Township of Avon to Edwin and Pearl (Rush) Aldinger. Was raised on a farm by Merrillan. She went to school for 8 years in Houghtonburg, and she went to High School in Alma Center. After she got out of high school. She worked as a house cleaner and babysitter.

She married Earl Dayton on July 2, 1955, at the United Methodist Church in Neillsville. She had 4 boys Rick, Jeff, Mark, Dennis. She stayed home and raised them. When they got older, she started working again as a babysitter. Marlene is survived by 4 sons, Rick (Rita), Jeff, Mark (Jackie), Dennis (Lisa) and 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and a bunch of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl of 67 years; parents, Edwin & Pearl (Rush) Aldinger; sisters, Emma Arndt, Eileen Burlingame and Iva Kubaskie and brother, Harold Aldinger; brothers-in-law, Bill Arndt, Ed Kubaskie and Dale Burlingame and sister-in-law, Evelyn Aldinger and daughter-in-law, Colleen and nieces, Tami Muenkel and Geraldine Johnson.

She is to be buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery. No funeral as requested by Marlene.

Weyhmiller, Michel L. “Mick” (16 November – 22 June 2023)

Michael L. "Mick" Weyhmiller, age 72, of Spencer, peacefully passed away at home on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

Michael Lee Weyhmiller was born on November 16, 1950, in Marshfield, to Donald B. "Mike" and Dorothy M. (Rogstad) Weyhmiller. He was raised and received his education in Loyal, graduating from Loyal High School in 1968.

After completing his education, he worked at his father's business in Loyal, Mike's Tire. Mick was united in marriage to Janice A. Marcotte on April 26, 1975, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Loyal. He and his brother, Keith, purchased the business from their dad in the late 1980's. They started Clean Sweep Car Wash in the early 1990's. Mick later became sole owner of the car wash. He retired from Mike's Tire in 2019 but continued to operate Clean Sweep throughout his retirement.

While you could find Mick nearly any time of day at Mike's Tire, he did have many interests outside work. He especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren (you could often times hear him coaching grandkids sports from the bleacher section), competing in lumberjack competitions in his younger years, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, water skiing, and collecting, restoring and showing vintage snowmobiles. In retirement, he loved spending time in his shed tinkering and fixing things for his friends and family. He had a “part for everything” and a mastermind to fix anything. He told the best stories, made the best of friends with whomever he met or wherever he went. Mick had a soul for giving and helping. He filled the room with his character and soulful presence ready to offer a helping hand to anyone in need, no questions asked. He was truly an extension of God's great work and will be greatly missed by all.

Mick was devoted and contributed greatly to the community of Loyal. He was a member of the Loyal Snow Angels Snowmobile Club, one of the founding members of the Spencer Sportsman’s Club, a long-standing member of the Elks Club #665, a former member of the Loyal Jaycees, and spent years cooking the best sweet corn for the Loyal Corn Fest.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Janice, of Spencer; his two daughters: Kimberly (Matt) Kline of Hudson, and Bethany Weyhmiller (Keith Gilge) of Chili; three grandchildren: Peyton and Tatum Kline, and Mason Dieringer; his mother: Dorothy Weyhmiller, of Loyal; two brothers: Robert (Maye) Weyhmiller of Fort Meyers, FL, and Keith (Lori) Weyhmiller of Loyal; one niece, three nephews, other relatives, and many, many friends.

Mick was preceded in death by his father; his father and mother-in-law, John and Betty Trunkel; and his brother-in-law, John Trunkel.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Loyal, with Rev. Emmanuel Famiyeh officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Frey, Matt Kline, Ron Trunkel, Larry Hamus, and Dave "Ralph" Shober. Burial will take place in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Spencer at a later date. Visitation will be held at the church, on Wednesday, from 9 a.m. until time of service.

The family would like to thank family and friends for their visits and support during Mick's final days, and the wonderful staff at St. Croix Hospice for their compassion and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the Loyal Food Pantry, or the Lucille Tack Center in Spencer.

NHS – DDA—Reaching The Top (Highest Award - 2023)



At the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, June 12-15 for the 94th Wisconsin State FFA Convention, Carla Byrne (not pictured) watched her first group of students, (l-r) Jacob Kopp, Gianna Kuhn and Emma Moen, earn the highest award an FFA member can get on the state level: the Wisconsin State FFA Degree. These members went through the application process early this year and walked across the stage to receive their gold charm. This also marks Byrne’s 10-year anniversary of walking across the stage to receive her degree.

Dorchester Days (Book Sale - 2023)

Out with the old, in with donations



While crews were busy setting up the Dorchester Days festivities during the afternoon of June 16, the Dorchester Public Library was hosting a sale of used books no longer in demand by library-goers. The sale was done by donation, with proceeds going to audio materials. Many of the remaining books will be donated to Goodwill, while the heavily damaged ones will be thrown away. The Dorchester Public Library, at the moment, does not have a wide audio material selection due to a lack of space.

Greenwood Dairy Breakfast Serves Community (2023)

The Greenwood Dairy Breakfast drew in a large crowd from 7-1 p.m., despite the pouring rain.
Hosted by Ed Krultz, the breakfast entertained all ages with delicious food, a petting zoo, face painting, a miniature train dubbed the “Locowmotive,” basket raffle and live polka music.

“The food’s good, really good,” Ralph Krultz said, the host’s brother.

The volunteers came from several local groups such as the Rock Creek Rangers 4-H, who served fresh vanilla ice cream to guests. .

“If you go near the goats, they’ll try to eat your shoes,” Bobby Lindner said, a Rock Creek Ranger volunteer.

Along with ice cream, classic dairy breakfast food was served: a variety of pancakes, eggs, cheese curds, sausage, applesauce and Greenwood’s very own Grassland butter.
