Landry, Mr. (? - September 1972)
(The first portion of this was cut off)….as town treasurer, was a pioneer
lumberjack in Clark County, emigrating from the Gaspay peninsula of Quebec
province, Canada. Mrs. Landry was a native of the Lake Winnebago area.
As a youngster he attended school in Thorp, then enrolled in teacher training
and taught in rural area schools before entering the University of Wisconsin.
There, he received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education in 1916 and a
master’s degree in 1926.
At the University he was a member of the varsity football team, captain of the
wrestling team, a member of the rowing crew, and a weight lifter, in addition to
working his way through the school.
From 1916 to 1925 Mr. Landry served as principal of Gilmanton High School. It
was in Gilmanton that he met his wife, the former Cleo Krampeter.
The years from 1925 to 1929 were spent in Menomonie where he held the position
of superintendent of the Dunn County agricultural school. He returned to Clark
County in 1929.
In 1941, the Landry’s let the county and moved to Port Wing where he was
principal of the consolidated high school and also taught vocational
agriculture. Upon retiring from that post, and not wanting to be idle, he served
as area on-the-farm veterans’ trainer and operated a small farm.
When his health began to decline in 1962, he and his wife moved next door to the
home of their son, John, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Landry’s were members of St.
Mary’s parish while in Neillsville and Mr. Landry held a membership in the
Knights of Columbus. A veteran of World War I, discharged as a second lieutenant
in the infantry, he belonged to the American Legion and served as commander of
the Gilmanton post.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Cleo and son John, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.,
include a daughter Lenore Landry of Madison, and a brother, Harry J. Landry of
Wisconsin Dells.
Funeral services for Mr. Landry were held Tuesday, September 26, at 9:30 a.m.
from St. James Catholic Church in Madison, with interment made in (last portion
