Hein, Mr. and Mrs. William F. (65th - 2 October 1972)
October was an important day in 1907 when Mr. and Mrs. William F. Hein of
Humbird were married in Merrillan; October 2 was again an important day in 1972,
because it as their 65th wedding anniversary. So important was Monday that the
elderly couple received a personal letter of congratulation from President
Nixon.
The day was celebrated quietly at the Hein home, with Beth (daughter) and Roy
Jeffery of Scott City, Kans., Neil (son) and Marion Hein of Chipita Park, Co.,
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Crume, Mrs. Helen Boros and Mrs. Leona Nyhus of Westby. The
day’s activities were limited to the few relatives because of Mrs. Hine’s poor
health. Cards from many friends, both local and nationwide, were received and
enjoyed.
Early the morning of October 2, 1907, Kittie L. Phillips left her parents’ farm
home (now the Jacob Lightfoot place) to marry William F. Hein. The secret, 6
a.m. ceremony was performed in the bay window of the Methodist parsonage at
Merrillan by the Rev. Burton Sills. Immediately afterwards the newlyweds boarded
the Green Bay & Western train for La Crosse and Mt. Sterling, a far-away trip,
for a honeymoon of 10 days.
A noisy old time Humbird charivari greeted the happy couple upon their retrain
to the Hein home. Still ringing in Mrs. Hein’s ears is the clanging sound made
by a boy beating on a 48-inch circular saw blade suspended on an iron bar and
carried by another pair of participants.
The Heins have spent all their married life in Humbird, and most of that time on
the site of Mrs. Hein’s birth in 1882, where they continue to enjoy the lakeside
location. The house was originally built by William Schmidt, a miller and Mr.
Hein’s grandfather, and later was owned by Valentine Hein, (sorry I don’t have
any more of this story.)
