Barnes, Leslie M. (9 JUN 1872 – 24 APR 1934)

Leslie Martin Barnes was born at Cresco, Iowa, June 9, 1873. He was son of Daniel and Mary (Delaney) Barnes. He died April 24, 1934 at his home here, after a week's illness following a paralytic stroke. He was 60 years, 9 months and 15 days old.

Thirty-six years ago he was married at Cresco to Elizabeth Brean, the ceremony taking plce in the Assumption church with Rev. Father McCarty officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes established their home in Cresco, and with the exception of one year spent in Butte, Montana, where they went hoping to received benefit for Mrs. Barnes' health, Mr. Barnes lived his entire life here. Mrs. Barnes died about 31 years ago.

Three sons were born to this marriage, all of whom survive. They are Dr. Reginald Barnes of Greenwood (Clark Co.), Wis.; Rev. Leslie V. Barnes of Lincoln, Neb., and Paul Barnes of Fremont, Neb.

Nov. 9, 1915, he was married to Miss Anna Baethke at Cresco and to this union was born a daughter and two sons, all of whom, with their mother, survive and are at home. They are Mary Elizabeth, Virgil and Vern.

Besides these he is survived by two brothers and one sister, Herbert Barnes, Mrs. John B. McDermott and Chas. Barnes, all of Cresco. His father, Daniel Barnes, died six years ago, and his mother died seven years ago.

Mr. Barnes was widely known in Howard and adjoining counties. He was engaged in the stock buying business here for more than 25 years. He was a successful businessman known to his associates as a man of high honor and integrity. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Woodmen of the World and Modern Woodmen of America Lodges, and of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He served as director of the Woodmen of the World for twenty years.

Funeral services were held at nine o'clock Friday morning in the Assumption Church, of which he was a member. His son, the Rev. Leslie V. Barnes was Celebrant of the Requiem High Mass. Rev. R.P. Murphy of Mason City was Deacon; Rev. J.P. Wagener of St. Joseph's Church, Cresco, was Sub-Deacon; and Rev. Edward Fitzgerald, Registrar of Columbia College, Dubuque, and Rev. F. Leo O'Connell, p;resent administrator of the Assumption Parish, were the Masters of Cermony.

Other members of the clergy in attendance wer: His Excellency Rev. Louis B. Kucera Of Lincoln, Neb.; Rev. Hradecky of Provitin and Rev. Stephen Kucera of Prairie burg, who were Chaplains to Bishop Kucera; Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thos. Conry, president of Columbia College; Ret Rev. P.S. O'Connor of St. Joseph's Parish, Mason City; Rev. Herbert Krieger of Cherry Mound; Rev. J.L. O'Connell of Lawler; Rev. Paul La Vellette of Rockford; Rev. Claire Drummy of Waukon; Rev. Weiss of Sacred Heart Parish, Dubuque; Rev. Hendricks of Plymouth Rock; Rev. John Fisher of Sumner; Rev. V. Dostal of Ft. Atkinson and Rev. F. J. Renier of Lourdes.

Pallbearers were Matt Flood, A.J. Owens, Webb Richards, L.J. Walsh, E.L. Weaklen and J.W. Zbornik.

Relatives and friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Kate Barnes of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. John Barnes, St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barnes of Schley; Mr. and Mrs. And. Barnes, Mr. and Mrs. John Sheridan and Lawrence Gorman, all of Lawler; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. C. Cooney, Thos, Ryan, Robert Murphy, all of Dougherty; Miss Cleo Gorman, Mason City; A. LaBarthe of Chicago.
