Opdyke, Edgar Theodore (6 May 1889 - 31 October 1972)
Edgar Theodore Opdyke, 83, Greenwood, died October 31, in Neillsville where he
was admitted to the hospital the day before.
Edgar Opdyke, son of Joseph and Mary (Davison) Opdyke, was born May 6, 1889. He
attended schools in Iowa and Nebraska and at the age of 16 moved with his
parents to Frederick, S. D. Mr. Opdyke was married November 27, 1915, in
Aberdeen, S. D. to Eloda Stabnow. They came to Greenwood in 1920 to farm in the
east city limits. They retired from farming in 1955 and continued to reside
there. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1965.
Mr. Opdyke was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was an alderman for
a number of years and also assessor for the city of Greenwood.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Jeanette) Shields of Lake
Villa, Ill., and Mrs. Melvin (Fay) Schumacher of Enterprise, Ala.; five
grandchildren; a brother, Percy Opdyke, and a sister, Mrs. Alta Philbrick, both
of Lancaster, Calif.
Pallbearers were: Fred Clintsman, Lawrence Cox, Donald Wells, Orville Oswald,
Lloyd Peterson and Peter Schields. Gary Schultz sang, “In the Garden” and “Abide
with Me,” accompanied by Mrs. Kathryn Ivey.
People from away who attended the service were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shields,
Peter and Dana Schields of Lake Villa, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Schumacher of
Enterprise, Ala.; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zimmerman and Mrs. Irene Pollack of Augusta,
Mr. and Mrs. Jensen of Colby and Mrs. Ernest Molle of Unity.
