Mrs. Lester Carteron received the following letter from Mr. and Mrs. A.H.
Noetzel, who are spending the winter in Florida.
Riviera, Fla.
15 Jan 1939
Dear Friends:
I just don't find much time to write. We are always out, either one place or
another.
No matter were you drive you will see luxuriant flowers and palms, or orange and
grapefruit groves, rich sub-tropical vegetation, curious masses of mangrove,
oaks, great cypress and long-leaf pine, and so many interesting triees.
There are "Trails" reserved exclusively for the use of pedestrians, bicycles and
wheel chairs, others for cars. Ocean drives either going north or south are
beautiful, and you can see the fisherman pull in his catch all along the ocean
or lake.
Today our neighbors asked us to go with them to an inlet some 40 miles from
here. It is a beautiful place where you can bathe or rest on the sand, or fish.
We also picked up some nice shells.
We saw so many sharks that had been caught. They either cut their throat and
throw them back or throw them on the beach for the birds to eat. These were
small, only 2 or 3 feet long.
The other day we drove to an orange grove and bought oranges, grapefruit, also
kumquats. I made 9 pints of marmalade. Tomorrow will make some of the
grapefruit.
We certainly enjoy sunny Florida. We are outdoors all the time. I am as brown as
an Indian. Won't know what I will look like when we get home.
Ambrosia and Grover were here 2 weeks and enjoyed it much. They were in bathing
most every day, even on Xmas Day. We also drove down to Ft. Lauderdale to call
on some of Grover's friends, then drove to Miami and Miami Beach, then on to
Coral Gable, where he also called on friends, then we drove to the Venetian Pool
in "Coral Gable," a beautiful pool of water forced in from the ocean. It is
surrounded with flowers, shrubs and huge palm trees. We … (the rest of the
