Gosse, Edward R. (6 JAN 1924 – 17 AUG 2014)

Edward R. Gosse, age 90, of Owen, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Clark County Health Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen. Father Janusz Kowalski will officiate. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Owen American Legion Post #123. Please join us for visitation from 9:30 AM until time of service Saturday at the church. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen is entrusted with the arrangements.

He was born on January 6, 1924 in the Township of Warner, WI, the son of Earnest and Mary (Henschel) Gosse. Ed attended Longwood Grade School and was a 1943 graduate of Owen High School. He was drafted into the US Army as a Private in March of 1943. His mother accepted his diploma from Owen High School that May in his absence. Like so many families he was one of 4 brothers who were serving their country during WW II. Edward began basic training at Camp Butner, North Carolina with the 78th Infantry Lightning Division, where he became a medic with the 310th Infantry Medical Detachment. When Germany invaded France, the 78th Division was stripped, leaving behind enough men to form another division. Edward was part of the later group which shipped out of Camp Kilmer, New Jersey in October of 1944. Edward was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant on February 3, 1946. In addition to the Purple Heart medal received at the Battle of the Bulge, he received the Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon along with 3 Bronze Battle Stars and 2 Overseas Service Bars and the Good Conduct Medal.

Upon his return to the states he helped out on his parent's farm. Edward married Frances Suda on May 8, 1948 and they raised 9 children on a dairy farm south of Longwood. He retired from farming in 1997. In addition to running a successful dairy operation, he served as the chairman for the Township of Longwood for 10 years and as a Clark County Supervisor for 8 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #238 in Greenwood and the Owen American Legion Post #123.

Edward enjoyed farming and gardening.

Ed will be sadly missed by his children; David (Vita) Gosse of Owen, Eddie (Connie) Gosse of Kenosha, Ronnie (Anne) Gosse of Marathon City, Judith (George) Mynatt of Green Valley, AZ, Cathy (Jay) Schaefer of Manchaca, TX, Nancy Gosse of Withee, Lisa Strathmann of Owen and Michael (Sara) Gosse of Merrill, grandchildren; Ryan Gosse, Alex' Gosse, Zachary Schaefer, Brianna Schaefer, Amanda Martz, Devon Gosse, Erica Frey and Anthony Frey, great-grandchildren; Garrin Gosse, Raya Rose Gosse, Caleb Peterson and Cari Martz, son-in-law; Troy Frey, and brother; Lavern Gosse.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter; Cindy Frey, three brothers; Gerhardt Gosse, Harold Gosse and Sherman Gosse and three sisters; Margaret Wells, Adeline Niemi and Gertrude Kolpanen.

In lieu of flowers a memorial can be made to the American Legion Post #238 of Greenwood or the Owen American Legion Post #123.
